Here's the deal -- Since I was a lil' kid, I've liked shooting large calibers. I tend to be a "recoil junkie." In rifles, over the past decade and a half, I started with Mosins and 8mm Mausers, moved into 30-06, then 45/70 Govt. and now have a .458 Win. Mag. Ruger No. 1 I found at a recent gun show. I don't hunt. I just like shooting large caliber rifles (and handguns). So I mounted a Leupold 4x VX-I on this gun and shoot 5 gal. water filled, plastic paint buckets w/ 500 gr. bullets. I'm looking into a 55 gal. oil drum full of water . . . Having seen Saeed's videos of his buddies shoothing the 577 T-Rex, and being slammed all over the ballistics tunnel shown on the home page here, I'm thinking I should find one -- Pretty much the firearms equivalent of going into the cowboy bars and riding the mechanical bulls. (Do they still do that, or did the mechanical bull riding die out with John Travolta and Uban Cowboy???) | ||

I looked at a lot of big bore clips on YouTube. Dial-up and so it takes forever to load. But we got to see a couple good ol' boys catch one in the head. "Four Bore" and the stuff in Saeed's range tunnel. Sometimes I think about laying out prone on a mechanic's "creeper" on the concrete landing and then seeing where I end up after pulling the trigger. The 50 BMG appeals, but we just don't have the open ranges to make it worth while. | |||

Hey Zedo, not the political forum so I'll be polite and reasonable. If you know a few folks at the local range that might have some REALLY big boomers you might see if one of them will let you shoot one. It will give you a concept of how far you want to take your "recoil addiction". I think Safarikid is a pharmacist when it comes to recoil addiction. My 338-378 Wby without the muzzle brake is close to as far as I want to go for a hunting rifle. On the other hand, trying a 460 Wby without the brake would be fun, at least once  .Good luck in whatever direction you take. Ken.... My bigger doubles were all fun...the .470, the .577, etc. The .450 Ackley was fun in a bolt gun (modified P-14). Still have/used a .458 a bit until Dec. of last year when my right retina tore. (The gun is still in the vault, but now my eye doc won't let me shoot ANYTHING.) BUT, even when my eyes were young and strong, my .475 A&M on a standard-weight Wby. Mk. V without a muzzle brake was more fun than I ever really want to have again. | |||

I can tell you this Jeffe, MY .475 A&M wasn't very shootable at top loads with 600 gr. Barnes bullets. The rifle didn't weigh much over 8 pounds, if that, including a Weaver K-3 and although a guy could shoot one box of ammo in an afternoon without really harming himself, it sure as Hell wasn't fun for anyone I ever met. Mine was made with a barrel from Paul Marquart, who later became a very close friend, and that barrel was mostly "hole", not weight. After it I dropped back to the .470 Nitro and pretty much stayed there where my 11 pound double was very civilized... or my .450 Ackley Mag which HAD a muzzle brake; both were a LOT more enjoyable to shoot. I think I'd rather take on a Grizzly with a feather duster than with a .475 A&M in a light rifle. | |||
