Now that I've opened the "Great Daly Debate" and am somewhat discouraged by the feedback......I'll ask another question.

On a budget......what action would Be you guys' preference to base a .375 WBY on?? Now I'm thinking, maybe, a 700?? It's gotta be stainless and I'd like to keep the whole deal (rifle only) in the $1000 ballpark.

For your criteria, the Win M-70 would fit the bill for a stainless rig, just poke out the factory chamber, replace the mag spring, and have the feed ramp checked out to make sure the ammo you like feeds well.

If you could tollerate blued, the CZ-550 is an option.

The barrel will end up being aftermarket as I want a 26" tube to wring the real Weatherby numbers out. It couldn't be as simple for me to have someone produce a gun that could just be reamed (except for the A-Bolt which has been heartily damned bt these forums). Would you still pick the 70 over the 700 knowing the barrel was gonna be replaced in either case?

Well I prefer a CRF. Either one will work fine. Some like the Rem trigger better. I have never had an issue with the M70 trigger and I prefer the safety. So I guess my vote would be M70.

I would think real hard about changing the barrel if you are on a budget. Running the 2"
difference on Loadtech gives about 50FPS. That is a big expense for very small gain. I would pick up a 375 M70 have a reamer run in it and never look back.

As usual just my $.02

I haven't read the other thread, but have you considered starting with a CZ 550 Mag in 375H&H and running a reamer into it?

If you're looking for more horsepower and not wed to the Wby, there's always the 375 RUM. Remington rifles in that caliber are pretty cheap right now if you hunt for them. It's one of those calibers people sell after a 1/2 box of ammo Wink

I'd look for a stainless classic M-70 in H&H and have the chamber reamed, well under a grand.

This is a good recommendation.....and as for the aftermarket 26" barrel it knocks one out of the $1,000 ball park and actually gains one very litle.....but for that matter the .375 weatherby gains one extremely little over the old .375 H&H too.

$1000???????? Good Luck

I suppose you better start with a win. m-70...Get a 300 and rechamber it...

For a grand, I would buy a 300 Win Mag, or a Ultramag and glass bed it.The 300 win mag is close enough and the Ultramag is better I suppose.

I see 3 choices on the cheap :

M-70 stainless 375 and re-chamber

M-700 just go with the RUM and you already got the 26 inch barrel .

Or , get Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby and re-barrel . These are available in stainless and really is a decent action ; what the Remington should be in my view ......forged receiver and forged one piece bolt , sako style extractor .

Absolutely M-70. Since you're chucking the barrel. You'll be hard pressed getting any new action and rebarreling for under $1k though. Figure $700 for the M-70 and $500 for the new tube.

The 375 RUM is a good suggestion, if you want more speed, might as well have a bigger case.
