Granite Mountain and others make receivers with “1.50 and “1.42 front rings. The larger ring is touted for use in building the 505 Gibbs and the 416 Rigby. My question is whether there any advantage to building a Rigby on the larger ring. I seem to remember that the Brevex had a “1.50 ring. However, the original Magnum Mauser had a “1.41 (I think) and the CZ 550 has a “1.42. Obviously, many 416’s have built on those actions. Does the larger ring give any advantage that overcomes the fact that a 416 built on it will be bulkier and heavier? Just curious.

I think the disadvantages of the larger action more than offset it's advantages for a 416 Rigby. Currently, I have a GMA "Express Magnum" on order that I will build a 416 Rigby on. The only advantage of the larger "African Magnum" is that it has a larger (.750" vs .700") diameter bolt providing a little more steel around the cartridge rim - this is of little concern for me. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." the oberdorf magnum was 1.41, just like all 98s. the minor thread diameter is 1.015 or so... cases in most mauser actions are UNSUPPORTED for about the thickness of the flange/torgue shoulder (about .18 ish.. it doesn't matter for this discussion) anyway the CZ 550 magnum is JUST ABOUT (in metric) the same minor ... and they put the 505 gibbs, or what, .635 or so... in that saem thread the rigby case is "only" .590 .. in other words, a proved by use issue oh, yeah, 585 nyati are put in mausers jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? For a .416 Rigby, I think 1.41 is fine. -Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Tougher material would allow smaller ring and shank with no problem.
