So, I'm thinking EAW claw mounts, with a 1.5x5x20 VariX III (I changed my mind). That'll hold up,no?

the 1.75-6X VX III works fine on my Ruger # 1 Tropical in .416 Rigby with Leopold two piece mounts

Sure will if you mount it right. I have the 1.75-6x on my .416 and it has been no problem. I have plain old Ruger rings on mine. A shot not taken is always a miss

If I had to mount a scope like that I think I would just make do with iron sights. The only easy day is yesterday!

Rob's idea is a good one. I did a variation and it has worked so well so far, I'm doing it to all my scopes...Once I wipe off all of the oil/grease from the rings...clean them good...I take rubber cement and put 2 coats on the inside of the rings. Of course let each coat dry before applying the second. The rubber cement id the craft type with the brush. This gives a thin coat of "rubber" that will help with full contact when the rings are tightened...and the scope won't slip. Also, the rubber has...and here I get theoretical...a tiny amount of "give" durig recoil. I don't know if it really does...but I say it anyway. Regardless....it works for me. Plus, no ring marks! I am with Pegleg. I know it is preference so the person that has it loves it, if it were me though I'd go without a scope before I would put a ring on the objective bell. just plain ugly to my thinking. then again I think Julia Roberts isn't pretty either so maybe I have weird taste? Each to his own. However I'm going with a 20 mill scope so it'll look normal.

In my opinion, the EAWs are not strong enough for a 416's recoil. 375's the max. I'd go with Talleys. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

I have a New England Custom EAW Quick-Loc on my Mauser magnum 416 Rigby and it is great. If you have a double square bridge, they machine slots in the bridges so the scope sits right on top of the receiver. Since the mount effectively becomes part of the receiver, it is plenty strong. Just make sure you get a scope that can take the recoil. SCI Life Member DSC Life Member
