So, I'm thinking EAW claw mounts, with a 1.5x5x20 VariX III (I changed my mind). That'll hold up,no?

the 1.75-6X VX III works fine on my Ruger # 1 Tropical in .416 Rigby with Leopold two piece mounts

Sure will if you mount it right. See Robs big kicker scope mounting method a few threads down .-Rob

I have the 1.75-6x on my .416 and it has been no problem. I have plain old Ruger rings on mine.

If any of you never ever want a scope to move in your rings, here is the ultimate fix.. Get some thin CA (cyanoacrylate) super glue and lightly coat your scope where the rings will seat. Then sprinkle some 400 grit carborundum ( brownells) over it then wait a minute or two till it dries. Pop it into your scope rings. It will never move. The rings can break but that
scope won't move! I also like to add a little accraglas under the scope bases to keep the bases fromm shearing. 8X40 screws dipped in red locktight help significantly also.-Rob

8X40 is not a problem and actually a good decision!. just make sure your gunsmith /machinist knows how to really center a hole. Not as easy as it sounds. Use the Warne Premier bases and rings. Don't forget to lap the scope in and add a little scope grinding compoun under the rings. That scope will never move after that. The Leupold 1.5X5's hold up quite well to the .460wby. However the 2.5X fixed are the most reliable scopes ever built for a DGR.-Rob

Make sure the rings are lapped and then put a dab of the lapping grit on the scope rings, seat the scope and tighten the screws evenly. Also use red locktight on the screws. Both Bases and rings. You'll never again have a problem.-Rob

OK, thanks Rob!

If I had to mount a scope like that I think I would just make do with iron sights. Mad

Rob's idea is a good one. I did a variation and it has worked so well so far, I'm doing it to all my scopes...Once I wipe off all of the oil/grease from the rings...clean them good...I take rubber cement and put 2 coats on the inside of the rings. Of course let each coat dry before applying the second. The rubber cement id the craft type with the brush. This gives a thin coat of "rubber" that will help with full contact when the rings are tightened...and the scope won't slip. Also, the rubber has...and here I get theoretical...a tiny amount of "give" durig recoil. I don't know if it really does...but I say it anyway. Regardless....it works for me. Plus, no ring marks!

I am with Pegleg. I know it is preference so the person that has it loves it, if it were me though I'd go without a scope before I would put a ring on the objective bell. just plain ugly to my thinking. then again I think Julia Roberts isn't pretty either so maybe I have weird taste?

Each to his own. However I'm going with a 20 mill scope so it'll look normal.

In my opinion, the EAWs are not strong enough for a 416's recoil. 375's the max. I'd go with Talleys. jorge

I have a New England Custom EAW Quick-Loc on my Mauser magnum 416 Rigby and it is great.

If you have a double square bridge, they machine slots in the bridges so the scope sits right on top of the receiver.

Since the mount effectively becomes part of the receiver, it is plenty strong. Just make sure you get a scope that can take the recoil.
