Okay, maybe I was working or something and missed the discussions. I did a search of the forums but didn't see anything.

The RSM line .375H&H, .458 Lott, and .416 Rigby are now history?

And the No. 1 in .416 Rigby also gone?

Thanks!

I guess I'd better find a used one, chop chop.

Paul, I've seen a couple in the $1,250 range lately. Great deal on a solid, well-done safari rifle.

Biebs, thanks.

Hey I'm no marketing genius but I thought the RSMs filled a niche; now if a guy wants a new .416 Rigby, there's nothing between a $1,000 CZ and a $7,000 Dakota.

I get it that Ruger wants to sell the .416 Ruger and .375 Ruger ammo and rifles.

I was really just curious about the business decision.

Ruger is just plain Dumb! They are cutting their nose off to spite their face on this one. The RSM rocks!!! I have 4 and love them all. Yes, they are no Dakota but for what you pay and what you get they fill a great niche!

Guys, the RSM was a fine rifle except in a .375 H&H where is was simply way too heavy. The best of the lot was probably the .416 Rigby. However, they apparently weren't selling enough of them so Ruger kicked them to the side of the road. I'll bet they are selling a bunch of .375 Rugers. It's just a matter of marketing.

I picked one up last year in 458 Lott, mint condition, with rings and $300 worth of ammo, for $1250, from a local seller. That thing is a tack driver with Hornady Solids.

Glad I did that. Their value will go up soon, as everyone realizes they are gone.

There are still a few available from distributors. I just ordered a new Ruger RSM Lott through my local gun shop. I figured I'd better get one while the getting is good. If you want one, now is the time!!!!

Out of curiosity, are these running about $1700 new?

They always seemed just a bit "clunky" to me. I'm tall, but I have small hands and neither of the two iterations never quite seemed to fit right.

It was rumored more than a year ago that the RSM line would be dropped from the line due to slow sales and the more affordable African and Alaskan models coming on stream. As mentioned, marketing decision. Had two, one in Lott and other in 375HH, but down to the 375HH version.
Some do not like the weight, mine is at 10lbs, but I have no problem with that. For a factory rifle, the one I have is top drawer with an outstanding piece of wood and having polished/jewelled bolt and follower it is smooth as glass and feeds perfectly with any load/bullet combo. "Dangerous-Game Rifles, Second Addition" by Terry Wieland speaks very highly of the RSM and considers the RSM's as one of the best values for big bore rifles available. Believe a quote from custom gunsmith to duplicate the features found on the RSM's would only reinforce the issue of value.

They are too big for a .375, but when you pull the trigger, the weight is OK for a .416 Rigby loaded to 2500 fps or a .458 Lott. I have one in the .416 and really like the rifle, plus I don't think the rifle has ever shot a group over an inch from the bench for three shots. I don't do 5-shot groups from the bench with a .416.

I decided to take my own advice. I found and purchased another Rigby. Now to find the right package and the money at the same time to make the hunt happen.

I picked up my new Ruger RSM .458 Lott yesterday at the local gun shop. It's really a good looking rifle. Classic safari lines and features. There are a few left at the distributor if anybody is interested. Ruger is really dumb for discontinuing this rifle. As soon as I get my neck and arm pain and paralysis resolved, I'm looking forward to getting it on the range. Then, someday, Africa!!

Several years ago I bought a night vision scope to mount on my M-14 to use in our sharpshooting program. It's a Gen. II+ and it is really a lot of fun. You'll enjoy it when you get it.

A word of advice, don't waste your time and money on Gen. I products or ATN equipment. In all my research on the subject I never heard anything good about it. Anyway, have fun.

I do not believe the 375 & 416 Ruger had anything to do with the RSM's demise. They were over priced for what they were IMHO, and the CZ is a better rifle for less money. Customers simply voted with their pocketbooks.

Rich

expect CZ to raise their prices, of course.

rich, you are out of your mind...
start with every feature of the cz
add a 3 pos safety
then add QD rings
then add intergal quarter rib
and THEN upgrade the cz's wood

over priced? tell my how momma like's her ford.. er tata .. er jag ... its very over priced for a tempo ---

there's no way, on earth, that a rifle that would cost MORE (today) to buy the rifle and add a 3 position safety is a better value...

bsides, unlike the CZ or your ford of england, the ruger is made in the USA.

"expect CZ to raise their prices, of course"
why? the winchester is a better gun, though not available in 416 rigby ... and is a price point just above the CZ

perhaps a quick price reminder is needed..
cz's go for 1K now
winchesters go for what, 1200? 1300?
rugers go for $1400-1600 ...

there's not a lot of room left in the ceiling there

Ninety nine point nine % of people who buy rifles don't know anything about what makes a good rifle-this includes the members here at AR.

I Think Ruger made the big mistake of asking too little for their rifles in the first place and tried to match the Win 70's and CZ's at a price point. I can't agree with Jeff more go grab a Montana or other M70/M98 action and try and build a RSM for less than $1200 its insane to think it can be done. I picked up my used RSM in 375 way back when for $799 and then converted it to 500 Jeffery. Now go and find a 500 Jeffery with the features of my RSM for less than 5-7K. The only fault I can find with the rifle is after a while the blueing fades differently on the receiver but when its rebuled it looks just fine. The RSM gets no respect because it is too much rifle for too little money from a company thats known for making practical rifles cheap. Import it from England put H&H or some other fancy name on it and watch them fly off the shelves.

After I put a LimbSaver on my RSM .458Lott, it shoots like a dream. As someone commented to me at the range one day, it looks like what an African rifle is supposed to look like; and it came that way out of the box.

Mine shoots 1.25" groups (minute of Elephant) at 50 yards benched and the same at 7 yards offhand. I recently removed my scope and replaced it with a Burris FastFire II for up close Elephant hunting this coming September. The FastFire is very small and unobtrusive and I'm liking it a lot so far. I went with the FastFire after having trouble finding a DoctorOptic and at $200 the FastFire is a steal. I'll be putting many more rounds downrange before I depart.
