.458 Only458 lott 50yd,offhand target pic -afternoon at the range
A big-game hunting rifle (as opposed to a target or varmint rifle)that will shoot three carefully crafted handloads into an inch, or less, at 100 yds, consistently from a "dirty" barrel inspires confidence.
I have to agree with Michael about "cleaning" barrels... well, maybe NOT after 1000 rounds... but it is hyped and overdone IME.
We have days at the range that are awesome... sometimes "miserable" would be a more apt description. Today, I was somewhere between those extremes. But, I did manage to shoot a sub-MOA group of 3 at 100 for my last series.
That was from my hunting load in a dirty barrel on my HUNTING T3 in 9.3 X 62.
I agree, if my hunting loads in hunting rifles couldn't shoot better than I can, I'd ditch 'em!
I went to this page because I'd noticed 40 responses to SHOOTAWAY! I thought: "This should be interesting". When I saw the crumpled target with .458" holes scattered about, I said to myself, "Oh no... not again!"

shootawayIt took a year for lionhunter to remove the front sight on his Ruger if he ever removed it at all(your typical B&M rifle owner).I wonder when he goes hunting if he shoots the game himself or has his PH do it for him.Micheal, seems like you never learned much from all those hunting vacations.

I suppose so Shootwhichway, you have lost me, I don't get it?
Remove the front sight?
B&M Rifle Owner? All of which have NECG Barrel Band front sights, standard big flip up/down ivory bead for Dangerous Game??? Lost, don't get it.
Me, learn? What must I learn exactly?
I think you are going to have to elaborate some, as personally I obviously have a long way to go to get to your level of thinking?

Not trying to be combative, but I really hope you are joking......
I have several revolvers that'll shoot under an inch at 50 yards as long as I do my part. This is a 1/4-inch 3-shot group another forum member shot with my BFR revolver in .500 JRH off the bench.
At 2 to 4 inches, you've either destroyed the barrel with your incessant cleaning regimen or you need to get back in there and redevelop your loads.

Funny all of my .458 lott's, .470 NE's,and all of my buddies heavy rifles including a smattering of big .45's and few .50's and over .50's all shoot under an inch at 50 yards from a bench.
I'm guessing we are just not using the correct shooteverywhere technique?

No,that's because you and all your freinds buy rifles just to look at.

RobgunbuilderShootaway- At 50 yrds I shoot my Bow better than you shoot that rifle. Yes REALLY! Your stock screws must be loose or your shooting Helmet is on too tight again! That target tells me your "screws are loose"-Rob

shootawayStock screws especially the one under the action recoil lug needs to be tightened so that it will never loosten.I am confident that with this new shooting stance and holding position that very soon you will see some impressive targets. It looks alot like the way highpower shooters position their butt on the shoulder(very high) and use one arm always up against the front of the chest but in this case using the hand against the trigger guard like a sling to push the rifle against the shoulder. It's amazing how this method has the rifle shooting the way it does off the bench.

Good shooting and even better if you use Shootaway's calculations which would put that at a quarter inch or so..

There is no mention if this group was shot offhand and using iron sights.I doubt it was and this is pure bullshit, especially from someone weighing 120 pounds.Let's see a video with you and the target in it.We don't have to shoot in a real match for you to win.A simple video will do.

Why on earth should she use iron sights? would it be better to use a muzzleloader also? Perhaps some shoot better with a scope.
As near as can be see you have never proved anything with your videos.

MJinesI have nothing against scopes. However, if someone is trying to make an apples-to-apples comparison of two targets, who would argue that it is reasonable to compare a target shot off the bench at 25 yards with a scope to a target shot standing up, offhand, with open sights at 50 yards? Just like it would unfair to take a target shot by a double rifle shooter at 100 yards open sights and compare it to target shot by a benchrest shooter at 100 yards with a scope. Let's just make sure we are comparing items that are comparable. Perhaps the target posted by Steph123 was shot with a .458 WM, offhand, standing at 50 yards with open sights, but I am going to take the under on that bet.

It will be a pleasure for me to show you it once I make it.I should have it ready in a couple of weeks or so.I am shooting the Lott less often lately.I am getting tired of the punishment.Eventually I am just going to shoot it when I go hunting.I have given in two 308's for rebarrel and it looks like the work is progressing. The guy who is doing the work I believe is from New Zealand and living in BC Canada. We are going to use Canadian Barrels made by Gaillard.I'll be able to shoot every week or two with the 308.

mumbles and mutters--
off hand at 50 is off hand at 50--if you refuse to use better equiptment then thats your problem.
Something to do with making the best most humane shot I believe (good sportsmanship and hunting ethics) or would you feel better if no sights were used? Thats how the first guns were made.
