From what I have been reading I get the impression this is a very tough bullet and will probably just pass through deer size game. It is already kind of pointy.

Thanks.

I've seen it for sale in Midway's catalog. I never gave it any though. I was thinking that it problemly wouldn't be any good for DG, If that was the only rifle I owned then I would have been down the line you are thinking Maybe Deer.

The 350 Hornady was designed many years ago for the 458 Winchester, in it's round nose form. It is a tough bullet. Later for the lever guns Hornady just flattened the nose and it made a great bullet for the higher velocity loads in 45/70 and the 450 Marlin. I have used this bullet in 458 Winchester-458 Lott and 45/70. Some fairly extensive test work some years ago give me a working velocity (IMPACT VELOCITY) from 1600-2400 fps. At 1600 fps impact it does nothing, no expansion, nothing. If it hit bone or something, then it would deform at that point some. At 2400 fps impact it still holds together, expands a lot, but could still be used at that velocity. At 2700 fps impact velocity in the 458 Lott it goes all to hell at that point. I have shot a few critters with it from a guide gun 45/70 at 1950 fps muzzle and it did great. I shot a moose at muzzle velocity of 2150 fps and it did a very good job, giving great penetration and dead moose at about 40 yds impact. I also shot a moose with one after passing thru a 3 inch diameter tree (I did not see with iron sights) the bullet left the tree, entered the right shoulder of the moose and was found on the left shoulder! Going thru the tree it had shed the jacket, but the core continued on! It hit dead center the tree. Now I am not contending that one can count on that--it was pure dumbass luck--but it did prove the bullet was pretty tough and continued to do the job at hand.

Very good bullets if you can keep them within that 1600 to 2400 fps range--I think for deer if you run them at 2200 fps or so it would be a hammer on them and do a fine job of putting them down on the spot.

Wow. This sounds absolutely perfect. I wonder if I can get them to shoot. I'll find out.

I don't imagine you will have any issues with accuracy with them at all. They have shot well in all my 45//70s and 458 Winchesters and Lotts. They have not done so well in my 458 B&M rifles???And I am not sure why, but I don't think you will have a problem. In 458 Winchester I use 63 grs of IMR 4198 for 2400 fps. You might want to reduce that a bit, to say 2250-2300 fps depending.

Not doubting Micheal 458,s experience , but mine was the opposite .. I had the bullet break up in spike Blacktail deer shoulders . Found chunks of the bullet in the deer when I processed it .. MV was around 2400 fps ... The 350 gr bullet in .458 that I like is the Speer . I have had very good results with it and orcourse the Barnes X and TSX bullets ...
I would never consider starting a fight with a brown bear with the 350 gr Hornady bullet ..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Frank mentioned right off starting a fight with a deer! I would not start an issue with brownie and a 350 Hornady either. Of course in the shooting world anything and everything can and will happen. There are few "absolutes" in our world for sure. And I have no doubt of your experience either!

Moving into the 350 Barnes X is an entirely different matter. I would go to war with brownie with a 350 Barnes X at 2400 or so without reserve! And in fact had one of my 458 B&M rifles in Alaska last year, backup to my 50, along for that very purpose, even though the 50 done all the work with a 470 gr HP.

I have not had good luck with accuracy in my various 458s with the speer, so I have not done much with it besides punch paper.

I have used the Hornady 350 RN on game in the 45/70 at @1900fps and in my 450 No2 at @2350fps.

I shot quite a few of them in a 458 Win Mag.
Accuracy was very goods in all cases.

I agree with Michael458's observations.

I have shot several deer and wild pigs with the 450 No2. I have only recovered one bullet.
I shot a pig at @40 yards facing me hitting him just left of the nose. The bullet split his head open pretty good, and penetrated almost to his diaphram.
