What is the status of the 550 Magnum ?

Pac-Nor now has reamers and barrels.

But MidwayUSA no longer has brass and will not.

Is the 550 Magnum a viable cartridge to start these days ?

I continue to be of the opinion that the 550 mag and 550 express are wonderful calibers if you lay in a significant stock of bullets for them, as bullets are not exactly an off the shelf item. Brass is made by running an expander through 460 wby case.

Keith,
that's on the {wrong) brass.
550 magnum is 3.00case, 3.8+ OAL
550 express, 3.35 nominal, 2.65 case

550 magnum will hit 2380 FPS with a 700gr bullet

550 express will hit 2180, but 2130 is MUCH better, with the same.

Cases are available, headstamped, from www.custombrassandbullets.com and qualcart.

the express will fit, single stack, in just about any "standard" action, and the magnum fits the CZ550 mag, enfields, Ruger RSM, weatherby x378/460 based rifles, as well as other large rounds.

Hammer,

it is my understanding that CZ introduced the 550 Magnum at the SHOT Show? Or that they are about to?

Hammer,

the really cool thing about the 550 Magnum is that you can pick up a CZ in 416 Rigby and just be a barrel and a bit of fussing away from shooting it.

What about bolt diameter? Will a standard Win or Ruger mag bolt work?

I thought Bridger was out of the bullet business. Or are there still some Bridgers in inventory that were previously manufactured?

I forgot to mention that neal and I are loaning out the 550 express reamer, from time to time. and there's a couple expresses, running around in SOME stage between chambered barrel and done "sometime"

Dan,
I hadn't heard from John that they weren't making anymore bullets, and I talked to him a couple days ago. Perhaps they have it shelved.

Jeff, I am referring only to what the lady who answered the phone said - that they were "out of the bullet business". Maybe she spoke too soon?

Lots of things still going on with the .550" I talked to JGS today and a reamer for the 550 Magnum is on the way to Chris at Pacnor. Still working on CZ and shipping supplies to the lab for true chamber psi testing. CH4D has made over 30 sets of dies so far. Midway not selling the brass does not suprrise me due to the cost of the basic case they were made on and I still have 4000 cases on order from Jamison recieved the first 1000 and they only lasted long enough to reship them. Thanks to everyone for your support.

RNS,
Any idea what PacNor charges for a chambered but unthreaded barrel in 550Express? Has Woodleigh produced projectiles for it?
Cheers...

I don't think they'll do deep chamber unthreaded..

about 400-450 for a deepchambered and threaded, IIRF

woodliegh said "no".. and after the the 530? issue, i doubt they will come until late.

however, taipan and bertram are expressing interest

brockman is making whole rifles, don't know his price

CZ will make you one for around 2500, complete
