I was shooting my Hannibal .500 A-Square yesterday and starting to really like the look and feel of the rifle. The stock soaks up recoil like a sponge, the rifle is extremely accurate and it feeds and functions perfectly. The more I started to like it, the more I started to wonder whether I am just suffering some long term debilitating affects of too much recoil? If I start staring at fat women, I am going to the neurologist.

As much as folks savage the A-Square rifles, I don't think there's another rifle that mitigates recoil anywhere near what an A-Square does. I've had them in calibers from 6.5-06 to 577 T-Rex, and found them all to be accurate, reliable, and easy to shoot even in the big calibers. Might not be much to look at, but they're a very functional hunting tool. I'm going to start playing with one in 300 Pegasus after the DCS.

From your description of your love for the rifle, sounds like you have already suffered some traumatic brain injury Big Grin

Just kidding but on a more serious note, modern technology has given us some more recent insight into the cumulative damage caused by repetitive trauma to the brain. Boxing a good example.

Having given that rather vague response - which is the best that any of us can provide at this time, I'd say that if the stock does as good a job as you describe, the likelihood of permanent brain injury is small.

I shoot a 600NE and 600OK regularly and do not worry too much about it. Life is short - if it makes you happy, don't deny yourself.

There is actual evidence of traumatic brain injury right on this site. Either that or accumulated genetic damage. rotflmo-Rob

Yep--very true. Asquare rifles are not much to look at but my Hanniable in 416 rigby will feed anything (flat points, spire points, round nose) and do it fast or slow cycle. It is the most accurate big bore I have ever shot, and it recoils about like a 300 mag (although its heavy and clumsy looking). I must have some brain injury too.

I talked to Jay Lesser that used to work for A-square/or work with him and he told me that he used dummy rounds with the bullets seated backwards down when he did the feeding work on the rifles. He said if it would feed those it will feed anything you put in it. Not a bad way to go.

There is just something about them that grows on you over time. I readily admit that the stock is seriously ugly, but the gun actually handles well (shoulder it with your eyes closed, open your eyes and the sights are perfectly aligned for example) and the stock really is effective at controlling recoil. The only issue I had with mine was with A-Square loaded ammunition that was loaded way too hot. The bolt locked up and a gunsmith had to get it open. Other than that, with handloads in the 2200 to 2250 fps range with a 570 grain bullet, it shoots lights out.

Sort of like loving a ugly dog I guess.

My non-bigbore friends that shoot sub calibers think there was something wrong with me to even want to start shooting the rifles I do...

Shooting big bores causes brain damage? So that's why my wife says I'm brain-dead.

Well, I had not thought of the Hannibal in that context, but the analogy might just fit. Big Grin

I was thinking about that this summer shooting the 550 Magnum, what was it we were talking about; oh yeah recoil, or was it MJ's preoccupation with fat women, ummmmmmm.

I always heard that dating a fat woman could be a lot of fun, sort of like riding a MoPed. IE, you could have a good time, as long as none of your friends found out about it.

Rich

MJ,

get one with tattoos, you got shade in the summer and shelter from the wind, warmth in the winter, and the tattoos on a really big woman are considered to be a viable substitute for cable TV once you get her rockin...
