Has the 416 ruger been announced? I heard something about it being in guns and ammo but couldn't find it.

I don't think so. It isn't on Ruger's website. One of our AR members said he seen empty .416 Ruger brass at the Ruger plant I believe. Do a .416 Ruger FIND search here at the Accurate Reloading site and you can find out more. I am planning to get a .416 Ruger myself, or a .404 Ruger if they do that cartridge. Ruger has been puttin'em out pretty quick lately.

I would really like to see them do a .475 Ruger on the same .375 Ruger case.....and while they're at it, they should offer their No.1 Tropical Rifle in .470 Nitro, .470 Capstick, .500 Nitro, and .500 A-Square!!!!!!!! That would be toooo sweeeet!!! Big Grin beer

That ain't gonna happen but the .416 Ruger probably will pretty soon.

Slightly off topic, but I do believe that Ruger will never build a .470 or .500 NE on the No 1 action. The action's shank is not big enough to handle that size of cartridges without extensive modifications, even though some gunsmiths have built them using the No 1. Even the .416 Rigby requires extensive modifications, and is just about the limit (in terms of size) that the No 1 can handle comfortably.

This is also the reason why Ruger doesn't offer loose or seperate No 1 actions-sell a barrelled action and you avoid liability lawsuits. Sell a seperate action and the idiot who blows himself up after modifieng the action the wrong way comes looking for trouble.

It is a pity - a No 1 in .470 would make a grand rifle! Watch out for a .450 NE in the near future, though, I think.

jvw,
Hey man, don't take this wrong, I am not being a jerk to you, but your information is not entirely accurate on the rounds. The 416 rigby is a LARGER in diameter case, than the BODY of the 470 NE .. .585 vs .573 .. The rim is not .04 or so larger than the 450/400 vs the 470 NE ...

and the FACTORY loadings (ruger has a history of denying any claims on handloadres) of the larger rounds are low pressure rounds.

A 416 rigby has a larger body diameter, higher pressure, and some lesron might load it to 416 Webby levels, than a 470 NE ...

Why didn't ruger load them in 450/400 until this year?

At risk of being a party pooper, this one is unlikely to happen. The has been discussion on AR about the feasibility of a .458 Ruger on the 375s case, & the feeling was that the shoulder was marginal. The .458 Canadian on the .404 Jeffery case gets .045" for a shoulder, ie .022" each side, about the same as the 10.75x68. The 375 case is about .012" smaller in base diameter, allowing .020 for body taper you've got a shoulder about .510", neck brass takes about .025" so your .475 has a .010 shoulder or headspaces on the case mouth just about. Sorry to rain on the parade. I think it sounds like a nice idea, you might just manage it with RUM brass, about .018" bigger in base diameter.

I was told by a Ruger Rep that the .416 would be out in late 2008 or early 2009..

I built myself a .416 Ruger on a Mauser action and have been playing with it..It duplicates the .416 Rem in every respect as far as I can tell..

I am going to sell my 416 Ruger and my next project will be a 404 Ruger.

I saw a pic of something like this on the Alaska Outdoors forum, one of the mods, by name of Murphy had built what he called a 425 Caprivi & described as being based on the 375 Ruger, I'm assuming necked up to take 404 Jeffery bullets. Tidy looking thing.

My guess would be that it takes the 425 bullet that mics .435 if I'm not mistaken..Necking it up to .423 would make more since IMO..and that is what I will do.

The bullet he has used appears to be an A-square Dead Tough soft point, with the bore diameter stepping out to the groove diameter just before the cannelure, which is of the same style as A-square uses, hence my assumption of 404 bullets cause as far as I'm aware A-square don't make 425 WR bullets. Stand to be corrected on this though.
