Has anyone tried necking up .338 Lapua cases to .416, .423, .458? I've heard that Dakota is developing a new cartridge based on the .338 Lapua necked up to .423.

Jeff, How could you? You forgot the .475" version, the 470 Mbogo. You also forgot the 50 cal belted version. Hmm, 50 cal belted makes me think more of the ma deuce than the A-sq. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

I have been shooting the .458/.338 Lapua for a couple of years. I will be shooting a .375 Lapua next week, I hope. I have made up dummies of .423 Lapua, since hearing about Dakota's idea. .458/.338 Lapua is the biggest you can go with a straight necking up of the .338 Lapua Magnum. If you blow out the body taper and shoulder, a .475 Lapua would be easy. Some say they have done a 50 Lapua, but at that point, I think it needs a belt. Love that Lapua brass and anything made from it.

mufasa, Let's see if Dakota ever does anything with it first. I would like to have a Dakota so chambered. Until then, the .404 Jeffery is hard to beat. For now, I have CZ 550's in .338/, .375/, and .458/.338 Lapua Magnum. A .423 Dakota based on the .338 Lapua Magnum would be an interesting addition, with chamber reamer and Redding reloading dies ready to go. But, it would be only marginally different from the .404 Jeffery if you get right down to it, and will be a rather bold move on the part of Dakota. The .375 Lapua is an obscure proprietary offering of a German company, done in Mauser 98 rifles starting about 2001, best I can tell. They call it the 9.5x69mm Tornado. The latest .375 Lapua, for me, has a Dan Lilja 25.75" No.6 sporter contour, fluted, stainless barrel that is 0.765" at the muzzle, 12" twist, of course. The stock is an ArmTec (made in RSA) fiberglass, that looks like a B&C with aluminum bedding insert, that I got from Nickudu many moons ago. It finally found a home. It has one of those Brownell's front sling studs that is a long bar imbedded in the barrel channel and screwed and glassed over, with the stud sticking out of the tip of the forend. Pad is a Pachmayr F990, so should be very comfortable to shoot. The stock is currently black, though I will probably paint it walnut brown. Scope is a Leupold matte black Vari-X III 2.5x-8x mildot reticle, in Talley QD mounts. A matte black Leupold 1.75x-6E, with heavy duplex reticle, in Talley QD lever mounts is the backup. I expect somewhere under 100 grains of H4831SC Extreme with any 300 grain .375 caliber bullet available will be the right load for this one, to do just over 2700 fps with modest pressures. Sling is a standard military leather sling of supple brown leather, made in India. A bipod would go well on this rifle, and 1000 yard hits on baboons should be possible.
