Any need to fill the gap 375-458?

Dago RedAny need to fill the gap 375-458?
Hey all, just doing that musing that we all do at some point on 'what should my overall battery be'. The long term planning of which rifles I need.
Just wondering, if I have a 375, and am half way to my 458 Lott, do I need anything in between. Surely I
want some of the in between stuff, 416 and 423, but is there a
reason for them?
Thanks guys, all fun discussions welcome.

vapodogIf you had a .416 or a .404 you wouldn't need the .375 OR the .458.....

OldsargeYeah, that's kind of how I see it. You pair up a .40 with a .33 and you pair a .450 with a .375. Now, of course if you already have a .375 and a .450 and then go and build a .40 that gives you the ultimate excuse for building a .33.

boom stickmore and more people are seeing the wisdom of the great 416 rigby...thus the move by federal to make factory rounds which will sell even more 416s. the reach of the 375 with the ability to hunt elephants with the right bullet. if i was to do a safari with one gun and big stuff was on the agenda and didnt want smaller stuff this is it! sell the lott if need be thats for the p.h. hunt with something more shootable in close second is the 416 weatherby and third the 375 weatherby. if you got the dough and like the gun the lott is great but i would sell it for a true stopper..450 rigby or bigger (the 505 gibbs is coming out from c.z.)

375h+h, 416 rigby, 450 rigby all three nostalgia and whoop-ass

AtkinsonI agree if you have a 416 Rem or Rigby, you don't need a 375 or 458 whatever...however, I can't imagine myself ever being without a .375 H&H, it has served me so well, and besides it's just not cricket you know......

Practyically speaking, NO! but we gun nuts are not a practical bunch, are we?
I think everyone should have a rifle chambered for every caliber that is commercially available.

FjoldIf we only bought the guns we needed I'd have a 22rf, a 12 guage and my 300 and life would suck.
I'm much, much happier with a whole bunch of stuff that I don't "need".

OldsargeThe "When" is tough. I teach 5 days and 2 evenings/week and then go to school on Saturday. About half the Sundays I'm the assisting minister at church though my wife owes me at least two Sundays when I subbed for her. So, some sunday
after the weather cools off, like in the second half of October o.k. for anyone? The best place to meet (because it's the best range around) would be the Angeles Shooting Range in the Angeles National Forest. You take the Osborne offramp of the 210 and head uphill past the ranger's station and then turn left on the road at the sign for the range. They open at 9:30.
Why am I selling it? Well, like the pith helmet and monocle, I just have got to have a double rifle, with hammers. PWN375 has a Kodiak he'll sell me that I can rechamber to .450 #2 and have a classy double rifle for under $3K. Budget bwana (read serious cheapskate!) that I am, it looks like the only way I'll ever get one. However, if it doesn't sell fairly soon I'll send it off to Utah and have a really good stock that fits me better put onto it. They it won't be for sale so long as I can carry it!

boom stickoldsarge...do you want to say oct 16th as a tentative date?

03 September 2005, 03:33
86thecatIsn't there a 458 wm necked down to .435 (425WR dia)? Seems like this would give almost 458 thump at better velocity in a case short enough for a standard length action.

Michael RobinsonHere's how the DGR roulette wheel goes (generally speaking):
.375
.416/.404/.425/Etc.
.458/.470/Etc.
.500
.577/.600
.700
And, BTW, each spin of the wheel for each of us produces a different outcome. Round and round and round it goes, and where it will stop, nobody knows!

OldsargeThe 16th
may be o.k. My son's birthday is the 12th and the daughter's the 14th so the 23rd is likely to be better to get around family celebrations. I'm sure that I have enough loaded ammunition to deal with the entire California contingent, especially since those from north of Santa Barbara are unlikely to want to drive clear down to SoCal just to get kicked around some!

Mauser RifleI can't imagine a rifle battery without a 375 H&H
When you say you are half way to a 458 Lott, does that mean you have half of the money saved, or the rifle is half way built?
A nice feature about the Lott is that you can also use 458 Win. in the Lott, almost like having two rifles in one! Two for one, twice the fun, right Fjold?

BTW Fjold, if you would quit playing th all those BOUNCING BETTY'S, you would probably have a lot more of everythng!

boom sticko.k. sarge...can i start a thread with oct 23rd as the tentative date at that range? maybe others with fancy guns can let others shoot them for a fee for raising money for katrina victims...is this a good idea? what do you guys think? we could call it accurate reloaders for katrina relief.

OldsargeI
like it! October 23rd at the Angeles Shooting Range off the 210 FWY. Use the Osborne off ramp. Turn right at the base of the offramp then turn left at the next light and just follow the road until you see the sign. It will be on the left. The range opens at 9:00 a.m. and shooting starts at 9:30. I'll bring shooting sticks and I must have about 15-20 loaded rounds. That's $400 to help with hurricane relief. After all, some day the Big One will hit and we'll want help, too.

Dago RedI'm in too, in for any get together with the other members that I can make. This far in advance should be easy for me to make it a for sure thing. I don't have anything fancy to bring, 375 is my biggest right now. Sounds like a blast, will be a real good time. Probably about 5 hours from me. I can leave early that morning.
Somebody asked what half way there is....well see....I'll try to make it a short story.
I was on a big enfield kick, gunsmith I knew said he knew a guy with one almost done I could get cheap. I did, 300 if I remember right, barreled action with bishop stock. 458win. After about 400 more bucks at local shop I was left with a horribly checkered stock, feeding problems and bolt binding (I just contracted them for stock work and assembly).
I found a great smith and sent it to him, we got started on it, discussed moving to Lott to get intended win. performance with lower pressure, then I put it on hold to have a 416 Taylor built for my stepfather on an 03a3 springfield. That should be done soon and then it is time to go back to the other one, and now I have decided I want all kinds of great stuff on it, the pop up peep, quick release rings etc.
The action would handle 505 gibbs, but then I would be looking at a new mag box and I am going to be lucky to get enough money by the wife to finish it as originally intended.

Too bad for me. I am going to be down your way this next week and then again the first week in November. I am actually looking at another big bore- a 450 Ackly while there. It would still have been nice to be there and watch the shootout. Of course the helmet would have been required.

It would be redundant. Use that money on trophy fees.
