I bought a Winchester take-off barrel from one of their Safari rifles. The secondary recoil lug had been sweated off of the barrel. Does anyone have a picture of one of those lugs? Better yet, does someone have the dimensions? Are these brazed on, or high temp silver soldered on? Thanks. LD

I thought it was just a square block dovetailed into the barrel. If you need the exact dimensions and have no luck, I pull mine off the stock and measure it.

They are silver-soldered on, and the probable reason yours has been taken off is that the barrels can be bent if the assembly cools unevenly. Both factory Safari barrels I had shot 2 feet low at 100 yards because of this. If you put one back on be sure to evenly heat the whole circumference of the barrel and the block to the same temperature, then let the entire assembly cool as slowly and evenly as possible. Since the barrel will transfer the heat away more quickly than the block cools you will probably want to play the flame on the top side of the barrel and slowly move it out as the assembly cools. I would use the low-temp/high force solder from Brownells rather than (high temp) silver solder. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

GaryWV, jeffe, free_miner, Don_G, Thank you all!! I will bum a block off free miner in June, and learn how to silver solder. I'll see how it shoots. Is there any way to stress relieve the barrel before I re-stress it . This is purely for entertainment and learning purposes. If it shoots well, I'll certainly use it though. If not I'll go to plan A (order a barrel from Krieger). Thank you all for your gracious replies and patience with a neophyte. LD

Are you going to make that into a rifle or is that what you are going to use for a pressure barrel? Mike

Yep , I bought a stainless 338 Win Mag in 1994 when I lived in Alaska. I stripped the parts down and used a fine file and/or emery cloth to deburr everything. Then I fire lapped it. I was about to send it off to be NP-3 treated when I got antsy and put on the Leupold QD bases because I wanted to see how it felt with a scope on it. Oopsie, only two of the four scope base mounting holes were on the same longitudinal line . Hmmmmmmmmmm, that might be why my plan A's always start with, "Get the receiver trued and order a Krieger barrel......" LD

Hi Mike, No, I'm slowly aquiring Lilja's for pressure barrels (easy to clean!!!). I found some technical notes from Homer Powley (God bless his soul) on how to calibrate the strain gauge system. As you might imagine, the ground work for that was done in the late 1940's at the Remington plant. BTW, I have 416 Rem Mag, 404 Jeffrey, 375 H&H, 375 Weatherby, and 9.3 x 66 Sako reamers if you need to use any of those. The test mule stock is filled with a fair amount of lead shot and epoxy. As you already know, using your bullets is like cheating (actually it is cheating). "Extra" velocity for a given pressure. Oehler just rebuilt my model 33 (!!) chronograph, so I can get semi-serious about capturing some data in June. I'll send you a note (wrapped around some $$ for more bullets of course). LD

Let me know when you are going to work with the 416 Rem again. I'll send you a 5 pack of these factory hand grenades. Mike

Will do. We have some feral animals in the Intermountain West that those would be ideal for. LD
