Sell it, buy a CZ in .458 Lott, gain three rounds of magazine capacity, fix it up the way I like it and bank the profits!

RobgunbuilderOh wait! Take it on a hunt with the great PH Pano Calavreas of Tanzania fame! He loves the .460 WBY. Claims to have shot a Lion off himself with one! You could of course ask how a legendary PH like Pano could get himself in such a situation, but then you have to meet him to fully understand! Can you spell MORON! Pano calls the .460 WBY the Hammer of Thor! I think the .460 WBY and Pano go well together. Both are big fat legends in their own mind!

are you saying you might have a screw loose?

nickblazeI may have asked this before, but what is wrong with the .460 weatherby, in a mark V or otherwise?
besides that they are relatively expensive in comparison to other rifles, i've heard and read about some people absolutely loving them, and then some people don't like them so much. is this personal preference or...?

Chris OI'd buy it, then put a scope on it & not locktite it !...Then i would let this guy at work that always gives me problems shoot it, but I'd make sure he'd hold it real Loose !!!!!!

Don't hold back Rob...let us know what you really think!

Did you check out the number of PH's shooting 460 WBY's on the PH Rifle thread in the Africa forum? I knew Roy Vincent used one, but there are few others too. FWIW, I've never met Roy (yet) but I really don't think he fits your description above.

Michael RobinsonThere is nothing wrong with the cartridge. It will kill anything that moves when the bullets are placed correctly. Too many hunters have killed too many big dangerous animals with it for anyone to doubt that.
It's just that the Lott is so much more practical - smaller, so more rounds fit in the magazine, and damned nearly as powerful - or put differently, plenty powerful enough to make the Weatherby superfluous!

416SWI'd shoot whatever was legal with it.
Shooting a Rem 405grn bullet at 2700 on roo's would be something to see, sort of like a 45cal varmint rifle
It would live next to my 458Lott built on a Wby Mk V.

FenringI'd shoot it a couple of times, let my mates shoot it, then sell it for something I have a use for.

nickblazei picked up my first big bore a few months ago, posted a few questions about it in this forum actually. its a .460 wthby mk V custom.
all the stories i heard, videos i watched of people firing the gun, i was honestly a little intimidated when i took it to the range the first time. with the brake on it was a pussy cat, loudest thing i've ever heard, but not terrible with recoil. with the brake off it thumped quite a bit more, but still nothing i would say that was unbearable, even shooting off the bench. it will definately get your attention, undivided, but its not terrible.

Mike SmithSorry I dont get this particular bashing. IT is a 458 right? You can load it up or down right? So what is the problem? I am not a huge fan of Weatherby style but that dosnt mean I wouldnt own one if the price was right and it would get the job done. Just out of curiousity what is the going market value on one of these unwanted unloved weapons? The way you guys make it sound you should be able to pick up a Mark V really cheap. Might make a good big bore for someone on a tight budget.

Idaho Sharpshooterhave you heard the term "butt ugly"? Wby owners have the same mentality ("look at me and my expensive toy")as the losers who put these silly ground effects packages, wing spoilers, and boombox mufflers on little turd 4dr 4cyl riceboxes to impress the crowd. The speed the ground effects and wings work at can only be achieved by dropping these cars out the back of a Hercules at about 10K altitude. Lawson thumbhole stocks appeal to the same crowd.
People who buy a new buick in lieu of a mercedes because the buick is bigger and has more chrome. Fortunately, we do not see very many here for very long.

jorgeNow I know why we tend to put our expended nuclear fuel out there. Don't own any {sic} little turd riceboxes (can you say "bigot?"),Don't own either a Buick or a Mercedes (but then again ANYBODY would know they are in two completely different price categories and for that matter, Mercedes are grossly over priced).
I don't like thumbhole stocks and I can even appreciate the fact that not everybody likes (or appreciates) Weatherby rifles. But what I take umbrage to is ignorance. To broad-brush all Weatherby owners with one swipe, is well, idiotic in the extreme.
Some of our most accomplished hunters have used Weatherby rifles and I am aware they are not the end-be all, taste is one thing and I respect that, but to describe them in tht light is well, stupid. Hell, they're not even that expensive!
Then again there are those that dogmatically stick to the belief that obsolete, moth-eaten, black powder pumkin roller cartridges and lever action rifles somehow make for excellent dangerous game rifles and cartridges. Fortunately we don't see very many for very long...jorge

SkylineYa know, a lot of the Weatherby owners I have met or known over the years were just average guys. they grew up reading about these magnum rifles and Roy Weatherby on safari. For many of them it was a dream to own a 'Weatherby'.
It took some of them years to save up enough money to finally buy a Mark V and when they got it, it was a cherished item. Most were in the .300 and they went out and killed everything they saw with little difficulty.
Others went through the Weatherby's and on to other more exotic or more trendy rifles. I personally do not own one. I have in the past, but I prefer Sako's (old style) and Belgium FN mausers.
Idaho Sharpshooter.......I guess you were just joking right? I guess Elgin Gates doesn't ring a bell with you either..........wonder what kind of ground effects he had on his "4 dr 4 cyl ricebox"?

I picked mine up used for about $1,000 at the Kittery Trading Post in Maine. You'll see them pretty frequently between that price and ~$3,000 depending on the style/condition. Keep an eye out on gunbroker.com, GunsAmerica.com, KTP.com, or the Cabela's gun listings. One will come up at a bargain.
I bought mine because I couldn't fathom stalking through thorns with a rifle that cost nearly five digits. Seem to remember at the time I couldn't come close to affording something like a double either, having just left the service.

tiggertateI'd rather have a 460 that a 378 but that's just me. I'd shoot it until I got bored with it and sell the thing to finance the next itch that needed scratching.

octaveKeep firing it at my local range and have people comming up to me and asking to shoot it, to witch I say put down ten bucks and you can fire of a round.

Since I have one (Brno ZKK602, though) already, I'd upgrade one of them to 500 A2.

you and i would not get along well at all. i own a little turd 4dr 4cyl that happens to fit your "wby mentality" model quite well. I also happen to own a Weatherby Mark V Custom Deluxe in .460wby. I didn't buy it to rub it in anyones face, or show off my "expensive toy". i bought it because i've wanted one since i was little, watching dangerous game hunts on TV with my dad on saturday mornings. that rifle is a dream for me to own, it has its own little spot in my safe, and it is cherished. so is my little 4 cylinder for that matter.
brand new from the dealer in town it was just under 3.5k for as the rifle sits. leupold vx3 1.5-5, scope caps and sling.

jorgeSkyline; That is exactly the kind of message I was trying to convey. However you sir, put it far more eloquently than I. I've taken a lot of game with my 300 and it has nothing, but nothing to do with impressing anybody. I impressed myself every time I land an airplane on an aircraft carrier--at night.
Stuntpilot: Nice "barn" and horses you got there buddy. Guess or "Weatherby mentality" didn't get us very far in life did it? jorge

The red one is a 1989 328 GTS.
I've reloaded Barnes 600g softs at about that speed in mine. With such a long bullet protruding down into the brass, it's nice to have the 460's roomy case for spare capacity.

WhitworthStuntpilot2 -- sorry for the misidentification! It's a small picture! Beautiful nonetheless!
What kind of velocity could you get with the 600 grain bullets? I mean was case capacity limited a bunch by the bullet's length? Just curious.
