My brother in law has killed some deer and pigs with Hornady factory Leverevolution in his Marlin Guide Gun.
It worked real good. However the bullets seem rather fragile, I would not want to drive them faster than Hornady factory ammo.

I have used the 350gr Hornady RN in my 450 No2 double at 2330fps to take deer and pigs. It worked great. But I would not drive it any faster.

If I wanted more FPS that that for a 350gr bullet I would look at the Speer or an X bullet or what maybe the best 350gr .458 bullet of all the 350gr North Fork.

Yup, pretty soft for Win mag velocities. They sure make a nice bullet for my 458 SOCOM. The nose profile makes for flawless feeding.

They were designed to accommodate the 450 Marlin, so velocities in the 2,000 fps range should be OK.

It does it's best work at the original factory 45-70 load (1850ish) velocities and at that speed (and down to 1300fps) it is really a pretty good bullet, when they do open. Occasionaly a severe angled short ogive will try to implode rather than explode. That's why you sometimes hear of ones that didn't open and then ones that caused devastation even with identical situations (range, velocity, animal, etc). Even the 450M is really pushing it if you are near point blank. At 2300 impact, they disintegrated.

NE450

You are spot on, and especially the 350 Hornady. While this is not about the 350 Hornady, it's a bullet I have used quite a bit, both test and in the field. Mostly the FN version, but they are the same bullet as the RN. Operating velocity--from around 1800 to 2400 fps.

You are again correct, want more velocity, go to 350 TSX, 350 Swift, 350 North Fork. I will be working with the 350 North Fork during the next couple of weeks or so at different velocities.

The 325 Flex holds up pretty decent as well. I tried them in the 458 B&M reduced velocity and they did rather good.

Step up velocity just a tad.

Going to a bit more velocity they start to come apart.

Hope this helps.

Michael

Thanks Michael,

I'm just now loading some in my H&R .45-70 at about 2250. Should work well for my purposes.

Thanks..

Sambar

You are talking about the Woodleigh 400 pointy bullet correct? If so, that is an excellent bullet, one I have several boxes on my shelves now. But it is not a forgiving bullet when it comes to velocity--don't run it too fast in anything you use! It expands violently, and at high velocity it will flatten like a pancake! In my early days I used it on a trip to Zimbabwe, light bullet in a 458 Lott. Running as I recall around 2450 fps or so. Shot a kudu broadside at 130 yds, flattened the kudu on the spot--bullet had some damage, and rolled around to the rear. Later I shot an impala for bait up the rear, only shot I had, we needed bait. The impala looked like it tried to explode, I literally watched it bulge from the rear, and it dropped on the spot. But the bullet did not make it to the vitals, and it really was an ugly scene. Recovered bullet was a big flat pancake, very short on penetration.

Soon as I returned I started testing at lower velocities to increase penetration. One need not run this bullet more than around 2100 fps at the muzzle, impacts at lower velocity provide good penetration and better performance overall.

Just watch velocity! Great bullet, but keep velocity lower for better overall performance and penetration.

Wonderful info, Michael. What are you shooting these bullets into for recovery?

Hi Bill

I use a mix of wet newsprint and catalogs/or magazines. 6 inches wet newsprint, 1.5 inches magazines. Or close to that. I have two impact boxes, both 64 inches long.

Thanks
Michael
