Gentlemen, do any of you know about or have experience with the Serbian/Zastavia made Rem. bolt action rifles?

They are built on a classic 98 Mauser action and the one I handled (.375 H&H) appeared to be very well made.

Cheers, John. beer

I believe that one was the exception. The few I handled were quite rough.

these are, by far, the worst contract out of zastava .. had been the interarms mark X, charles daly, and then, of late, remington stamped their names on the barrel.

poor inletting, from those i have seen, and rough.

but a good gunsmith action

the less you have to pay for one, the better they look.

In previous iterations they were very nicely finished rifles. And less money.

I have never heard of Serbian/Zastavia made by REM but of corse the rifles I've got are about
30 years old. I'VE replaced a lot of barrels over the years.

The Remington 798s were made by Zastava and imported by Remington.

I looked at one in a local shop. For the money I went with a CZ in 375. The remington 798 weren't bad rifles but some shops seem to think that caliber equals price. Just because it's a magnum does not mean it has to cost $950. I think that at $500 they are a good value for those who like to tinker.

Hello John,I have one in 458. They are a bit rough like other guys said. The price was right, $530 in the door. It is a Mauser (primary importance) and converting a military action would be time and money that I did not want to devote to a project right now. I wanted to shoot it now. They have certain commercial touches: trigger and safety, drilled and tapped, mag bolt face, feed rails for mag's, dual cross bolts, and bedding block. It may need a more durable trigger. It feeds, functions and is accurate. I have plans to make it a 458 AR.

I have the Remington 798 model in.375 H&H. I believe it was $499.00 on a closeout. My buddy bought the same gun in .308 and it shoots great. A real bargain in my opinion. I have seen some really nice aftermarket stocks for it, but then the price would be up twice what I paid. I will keep it until I find the right Ruger MKII in .375 H&H.

I looked at two one in .375 and second in .458. For mass produced item these are not bad handling guns at all. Unlike some I didn't mind "oreo cookie" stock either.

I have one in .375 H&H and for the price it is a solid rifle. I got one of the closeouts for $499. My only complaint is the barrel is a bit longer than I prefer (its 26", I would prefer 22"-24").

I foolishly failed to buy one of these a year or so back, when the Remington-marked ones were still available. For the money they looked quite good, and had an interesting laminated stock...a normal stock, cut vertically in half lengthwise, and then laminated with a couple of very thin layers down the middle. Metal finish was reasonable, action was fairly smooth.

A local shop got some in recently, and I went down to get one. The new ones are not marked with the Remington name, just Zastava. There is no aspect of them that is not absolute crap. Stock work, metal work, roughness of action...all abysmal.

Buyer beware.
