or Just Another Bolt Action Rifle. Cool

My Montana action finally made it back after I switched from .404 to .416 Remington in midstream.
24" #5 contour Douglas barrel with a NECG banded front and adjustable rear. Presently it has a Leupold 2.5x scope mounted in some used mounts and residing in a Winchester take off stock with 3/4 pound of lead/epoxy mix bringing the empty weight up to eight pounds.

The PLAN (subject to more midstream antics) is to mount a 1.5x-2.5x to 5x-8x scope in Leupold QR rings and then worry about upgrading the stock. Big Grin

Oh you traitor, you should be hung, drawn and quartered for switching from a 404. Nice practical setup though. What have you in mind for a stock upgrade, staying with synthetic or looking to a fancy wood?

eagle27,
It wasn't easy switching, but the fellows we hunted with in RSA this May were much more positive on the .416 than the .404 and ammo was readily available for the .416.

While I can appreciate fancy wood I watched the luggage monkeys at Dulles toss my case about ten feet across the tarmac while unloading. Mad
I was saved by my wife who herded me into the terminal, but I still worried about our stocks for the entire twenty hour flight to Jo'burg.

I'm probably going with a McMillan stock for the piece of mind while traveling Cool

Well for what it's worth, I painted the Winchester take off stock from ARbay with three coats of Krylon Fusion green paint and added the Leupold QD scope mounts with a Zeiss Conquest 1.8-5.5x scope. The action was bedded with Locktite epoxy putty in the recoil lug area and that's held up to about fifty full powered .416 RemMag rounds.

Sighted in the scope today at fifty yards and then moved to our very under construction and muddy rifle range where I fired one three shot group over the hood of my Jeep. 1.5" group dead on target will do for now.

Interesting note is that the Montana action will cycle empty brass! Not just one or two, you can load the whole magazine and then run the bolt at speed just like it was loaded with proving dummies. Smiler

I think I'm going to like this rifle. Big Grin

Very nice!

The PH action is going to be just as cool a platform for really big cases.
