Woo-Hoo!! Butch had his new four bore double rifle on display at the booth. Twenty-five pounds, and eighty-five thousand dollars. With the last of the Owens double fours selling for over $115K this will be neat. There were two companies selling ammunition for them there, and neither knew about the Searcy double being made before I mentioned it to them.

I think it was a really great show, people were buying things, and rifles, and hunts.

I'm just curious what hte point of it is, that's way too heavy a gun to hunt with, and at that wait you could probably carry a 50bmg. granted, the rounds are awesome looking, especially next to other common rounds, but still...??

Chuck,

Was that reaction from the cartridge, or Fjold's avatar?

Seems to me I remember the big double from Jurassic Park was for sale not too long ago. I dont remember if it sold or not. It started at a higher asking price and got reduced a couple times. If I remember correctly and Im not sure I do it was right in this same price range.

the JP rifle was there for sale, price keeps coming down. The engraving is well done, but a bit controversial.

Who built it and what is the engraving?

the rifle is one of seven or eight total made, with no more to come IIRC. It was made by Ken Owens, for AR member Safari Kid. It has lavish engraving, but the theme was Jurassic Park, and is somewhat controversial. I believe it is currently owned by AR member Big Doggy 700. You might PM him for details. I shot it in September, and at 26 pounds the recoil is not bad at all.

Oh, I get it now! homer I saw picture of that rifle or at least a link to where it was for sale, I don't remember exactly.

When you guys were talking about Jurassic Park I thought you meant the double rifle the guy carried in the film.

Without naming names or maker's, I've seen the engraving on one of the guns in question and it is just not all that well done, IMO. But, hey, it's not mine, and I'm not going to buy it or shoot it, so to each his own.

I do know that if I was going to spend tens of thousands of dollars for any gun, then I'd either fork over the money for the best quality engraving, limit the engraving to the best quality but lesser amounts that fit my budget, or not have it engraved until I could afford it (which doesn't seem like it should really enter into the equation since if you can afford the gun, a few extra ten large for engraving should be chicken feed). Of course, there is quite a bit of "best" engraving that is not to my taste, but I'm not talking about tastes, since all that has to be satisfied is that of the buyer, but execution.

Charlie,
IMNSHO, the "perfect" enraving is a single lower case j done in cletic knotwork ... I don't care for engraving, 99.99999% of the time .. and would rather have a SECOND plain gun for the price!

Ken Owen actually made 6 total 4 bores and is not making anymore. The mastodon theme had nothing to do with Jurrassic Park. There are lots of great pictures of it on the Lewis Drake website under rifle inventory. It is currently for sale for $98,500.00 dollars. I am trying to sell it because I happen to have the 6th and final Ken owen 4 bore double also. I really don't need 2 of them. All of the engraving was done by Bruce Bradshaw, who spent a little over 320 hours doing the work. The Mastodon wieghs 25 lbs 10oz. with 22 1/2" barrels. The Ken Owens 4 bores are true 1.052" diameter barrels and shoot a 2000 grain naval ordinance bullet. The standard load is 114 grains of blue dot and 2 grains of bullseye. The brass shells are turned by hand using a lathe. Butch's 4 bores have a diameter of .990 if I am not mistaking. I wish I had one of each! Both are very well made rifles. Just a little information for those that are curious. Several guys shot the Ken Owen 4 bore at the Texas big bore shoot south of Houston this past fall. Various size shooters, and all handled it rather well. thanks Ken

I stand corrected. My information that was Ken had ten sets of action casting, and two turned out to be unusable. I shot the rifle pictured for my sixtieth birthday, and NO! BD700 did not offer me a senior citizens discount.

How about showing the other side?

Idaho, you are right, ken did have an extra receiver. One turned out to be no good. He had started with 7 and ended up with 6 good ones. A company in England wanted him to make 10 four bores for them, but Ken declined saying that he was working toward retirement after a few more projects and a few gun projects for his family.

My 4-Bore bullet dia. is 1.020" dia. CIP is 1.0007" dia. I'm currently in talks with Peter Hofer to provide him with 600 rounds of 4-Bore.
The rifle illustrated is the first ever made all stainless steel 4-Bore ever made. Peter Hofer told me that you can't solder stainless. And asked me how I did it. My answere was Kreighoff asked me the same question years ago.

Butch, that is an awesome looking rifle!

Just wondering, did you perhaps mean CIP diameter is 1.007" or 1.0007"? My 1885 or 86 Bland single uses 1.007" bullets and "Kynoch's drawn case," but I don't know if it is the same as the now CIP 4-bore.

What bullet/load will it use? I take it Peter Hofer is building some too if he needs 600 rounds (I just loaded 27 rounds myself today). Are you making the cases yourself? Thanks for any info you can provide. Keep up the good work beer

Best Regards,
Bob

Then the ctg case (chamber) size on all these new 4 bores follow the CIP std and only very minor bore variation? Black powder and lead bullets, maybe close enough?

Bob,
The Kynoch round is what I originally used for the making of the cartridge. But I could only get barrels that had a groove dia. of 1.020". I make both the bullets and the brass. It is machined from bar stock. I use 112 to 114 grains of blue dot, and compressed cork over the powder.
