I'm getting heat about converting my perectly good Mod 70 Safari CRF 375 H&H into a 404. I noticed that MRC is putting out a RUM sized 1999 action. (Yes I have a PH on order like the rest of you) However, I was wondering could you, should you consider building a 404 Jeffery on this action. It should be similar to the Win 70 Classic 300 RUM. The reason I ask is all of the Win 70 300 RUM's are being sold as collectors guns right now ($800+) and if the MRC might work the cost's would be about the same. Just a thought to save the Mod 70 Safari from the chopping block.

"MODEL 1999 MONTANA LONG ACTIONS
The first action produced by the Montana Rifle Company was the standard Long Action.

The long action will handle any cartridge from the 270 Winchester up to the 375 H & H and 458 Lott length cartridges.

It comes standard with one of 3 different magazine boxes. One for standard cartridges that has an internal magazine length of 3.400", one for longer magnum cartridges that has an internal magazine length of 3.650" and one specifically designed for the ultra cartridges that also has a internal magazine length of 3.650".

The action will have either a standard bolt face of .473" or a magnum bolt face of .534" depending upon the cartridge of the rifle you are building.

It is available in either 415 Stainless Steel or 4140 Chrome Moly.

Thanks Brad Smiler

Sure you can do it, I think Rusty has a pair of them built on MRC 1999's.

I have a 404j built on a mrc 1999 action with Mcgowen barrel. It feeds and ejects slick as a whistle. This is the path you should take or find a rem700 in one of their ultra mags and just do a rebarrel. You should be catching heat for wanting to take apart your Mod 70 Safari CRF 375 H&H, that would be criminal! Eeker

I have a MRC chambered in 404J. I bought it from 404WJJeffery. It is a MRC barreled action, Accurate Inovations stock, gunsmithing done in North Carolina. Feeds and functions flawlessly and is very accurate. I shot an Elephant in Zim in June 09 with it. I love that rifle.

Hey I think you hit a home run. Thats the setup I was looking at. A nice AI stock to keep the wood costs reasonable. Do you mind how much do you estimate that rifle cost to put together? I'm looking to consolidate my Safari rifle collection so if I have to sell two (ie Rem 416 + Win 375) to get a nice 404. I might go that route. Also do you have any photo's thanks Brad Smiler

Brad,

The seller was asking $2,500 for the rifle and its twin brother in .458 Lott is shown at www.precisionriflesales.com. Click on Gallery, left side, 4th down, mine is identical but the wood is better than picture reflects.
