This is actually just a teaser to wet your appetite and keep you in suspense.
The Barrels for an upcoming project arrived today, so I thought I would give you guys a glimpse of things to come.
These beautiful barrel blanks arrived today, the ball resting in the one barrel is a .50 cal ball(just for size reference). These are the real deal, 1.310 bore, 1.325 groove 1:48 twist 2" unprofiled blanks. Eventually they will be turned down to a nice taper, and chambered for the 2 Bore S&H brass. This is going to be another Jones Underlever build only SxS this time.
I have almost all the parts and materials in shop(Still waiting on a few back orders to come in on small parts). But I won't be starting on it for a while anyways because I have other customers ahead of this build.
Kinda cruel to leave you in suspense like that isn't it....

Both barrels fired at once would be a 1 bore.

As expensive as these are, the water mains would have been cheaper.

Yeah and likely to seriously injure or kill the shooter if it doubles, that's why I will be building this one with Inertia pin intercepting tumblers and stalking safeties on the back action locks.

I think most people would load only one barrel, and keep a change of underwear, pants, socks, and shoes in the other barrel.

That's not a bad plan. I was actually thinking you never have to shoot it, you just point it at the elephant and when it see the size of the bores it will sh!@ itself to death.

What do you think it well weigh when your done considering a 4 bore well be around 24lbs.
15 October 2010, 02:02
CowboyCS
Well the single shot 2 Bore Jones weighed 22 pounds 3 ounces so with the extra barrel, the extra weight in the action and the ribs, as well as counter balance in the buttstock, probably 28-30 pounds.

Unlike everyone else who has a choice in the matter, I don't, I have to shoot it until a common load is developed and then regulate it.

A two bore would be great fun!
Here is rhe way "I" would want mine:
60" barrel breach loaded no stock or foreend WITH WHEELS
It could be the "lil brother to my 1 1/2" bore ML cannon.

While I think cannons are fun, I have a couple scale versions, they just don't rock your world like a shoulder gun this size does.

back in HS we used to call girls who did a little "show & tell" like this prick teasers...
I'll give you a call later about the Rayl 10ga rifled barrel thing.

Sorry to disappoint you Rich, but I'm an ugly middle aged man. If I had ever been an attractive young girl I would have married for wealth and never worked a day in my life.
If you can't get an answer on the phone, it's because I am out cleaning up trees and making firewood. We dropped a bunch of ice and wind(last winters storms) damaged trees on the ground Monday and I've been busy all week trying to get them cleaned up. So I'm not in my shop close to the phone.

I've got a full set of dimensional plans for a gatling gun in 45-70gov't, I'm sure I could scale them up appropriately. The real question is, how much money do you have?

I was thinking a scale version of the Martini Henry 577-450 gatling but that works too Was thinking a black powder 2 bore could be the baddest legal to own and shoot gun but I guess you would have to charge in the range of 50K per on those.

Push back from the computer, take a deep breath and then relax, cause I have a 2 Bore Boxlock M/Ler that I am in the middle of right now, and then I have a .45cal flint chunk rifle and then I have a .45 cal Wesson Boxlock before I even start working on the 2 Bore SxS. The .45 flint and the .45 Boxlock should both be fairly quick builds though, which is good cause I could use a break from building 2 Bores for a little while before I jump into the very daunting task of a 2 Bore Jones Underlever SxS. It should entertain for quite a while though, the Single shot took me 9 Months to build so I figure the Double will probably take 9-12 months. That's a lot of free entertainment for this crowd, I think you can wait for it.

I believe the Navy had a "1 pounder" gatling gun about 110 years back. I don't remember details, but suspect it was around 30-37mm.

To the best of my knowledge nobody had gone bigger than a SxS 4 Bore, but if anybody has any information on a 2 Bore SxS, I'd love to see it.
I personally wouldn't want a falling block 2 Bore, it would be virtually unusable from an ergonomic stand point and very expensive to build. Theoretically, it's doable, but it would be so tall and thick through the wrist that it would take a giant to really get his hand around it, and one-off prototyping is very expensive, well known and tested designs can't just be scale up, unfortunately.

If around for couple more years, maybe to do a 2bore, I want to scale up my 4bore design where I put falling block in one piece t-hole stock. That way easier to grip it ok, and the design is great for taking up recoil.Ed

Actually what you are seeing is the run-out from the rifling cutter being un-supported as it exits the barrel. These blanks are longer then finished length, they have to have an inch cut off of the muzzle end to get rid of the run-out and then be profiled and crowned. The Breech end will have the run-out cleaned up when the chambers are cut since the reamer will completely remove the rifling at that end. The middle is perfect though, the rifling is as good as any I've ever seen. It will get lapped though to break the edges and break in the barrels, but that is something I do with every barrel regardless of manufacturer or caliber. It saves range time, I can do in the shop in a half hour what would take all day to do at the range firing it, and with this caliber, I couldn't fire lap it in a day anyways because I can't shoot it that many times in a row.

I'm thinking this one will have less felt recoil than the single shot that I built does, it'll weigh probably 4-6 pounds more, that alone will help a huge amount.

Yep, I just did not see the hacksaw cuts an inch and a half from the muzzle ends. The rest is routine stuff, except for the size and weight of barrels, TWO BORE TIMES TWO!!!
25 pounds is about all I can handle offhand.
It is what it is: ONE OF A KIND
