I have located some Charles Daly Mauser actions for sale, are they decent for something huge? I dunno, 548AR, 550 express (keeping in mind action length)? They are the 375 H & H length. This would definately be a cheap way to start a project.

I would get them anyway; I doubt Remington is going to sell bare actions or barreled actions if they control the import of Zastava now. The source is going away. Jeffe can jump in here but I think the 550 will work in a standard length Mauser. The problem will be the box, not the action.

I started to buy one the other day and still might buy a 375 length, they may be hard to get in the future and its getting hard to find 375 length FN's. I'm with Harry, I doubt once Rem gets there paws on them you won't be able to buy a barreled action. They would work find for an AR, but 550........thats another breed.....I can't comment.

I think by this time next year any CD actions will bring a tidy profit. Remington will raise the price point like they did when they contracted all the Bakial production and oustanding CD pieces will follow the curve up with them. Plus the source dries up. Worst case, they'll never be cheaper and you have a couple of decent actions for future projects.

For those of you who like roll over cheek pieces, CDNN has somewhat tastefull walnut Charles Daleys in 375 & 458 for $569. Not my cup of tea 'cause I don't understand a 458 without iron sights but that's just me.

The 550 express can fit on a 98, my first one is, though a single stack. it's a 3.35" oal round, and so are the AR rounds

IMHO the daly's are certainly a decent action, and if you want a 3.65 friendly mauser, you can get a barreled 375 or 458 for less than the same cost as a custom bottom metal.

btw, next nenxt 550s (mag and then express) will be on an enfield for the mag and a ruger 77 for the express.

Thats for the guys that want to put 500gr solids through cars @ 500 meters! Guess that would require a mil dot scope, huh. You get the picture.

I dunno. I have to really add up the cost compared to gettin a CZ550 American in 416 and rebarreling for 470 MBOGO. I guess the deciding factor is do I want to spend the money for a stock or not.

Just out of interest, would it be possible / viable to make a 416 Rigby on a Zastava 375 action - assuming magazine is an issue, but otherwise?

Thanks

Fergus,
*I* wouldn't do a rigby on a standard 98.. but that might just be that my skill level is too low

Try this https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9411043/m/783106953

If that didn't work it's on page 5 in gunsmithing near the bottom.
