Putting a Belt onto a Casing

BigFiveJackPutting a Belt onto a Casing
I've read here where Ed Hubel has swaged a belt
onto the 50 BMG case and opened it up to fire
the .700" diameter bullet. How much is involved
to swag a belt onto a piece of brass? Does this
involve using an expensive machine? What's the
whole process?

GrandpasezJack- I work with big cases and only do it
the safest way I know how. My belt to base
measurements are .015- 025" difference
I don't puts belts on by swaging only. I swage the case
after I start the belt step with a tool.
I do it on cases that have enough thickness in the
radius of the inside corner to have enough thickness
after the belt is on.
When I start belt step I have side angled out
from the bottom of the step, so that
case has a slight outward curve. That curved side is
what I swage straight.
Others made a belted case by swaging on a big belt
step on bmg case, .040" difference and they crimped the
inside corner of case.At least one blew up, destroying
a real expensive gun and hurting the shooter. The process
of hard crimping or sharp bending the corner of the case,
weakened cases. I heard they used 40ton hydraulic press.
I saw the hard bending when I sectioned a case.
I've tested my bmg brass based 700 cases to over 100,000 psi
in my test barrel with screw on breech, before I had
the big action to put it in..Ed

BigFiveJackThank you Ed. Could you do it
on .375 Rem Ultra Mag brass?

GrandpasezJack- I don't have time. I did a few 375 RUM cases
for a .500" belted case a couple fellows here
two years ago. I just can't take on another belted
case. I'm busy with 14 things it seems all the
time, stamping and finishing cases for my 585 H,
and getting 585HE done, making 700H and HE, doing 4bore work,
12ga FH, regular 12ga,10ga,8ga testing, making 499HE cases,
barrels, testing,etc.I wish I was 50 again.Ed

BigFiveJackI was asking is it mechanically possible based on
your method. You have effectively answered YES.
Thank you. Why is your 499 cartridge called 499
and not 500?

Another member here has the dies and reamer.

GrandpasezJack - Yes it can be done, and what caliber
are you wanting to do. I can tell you how
and post a sketch, and describe small lathe
setup to do it.
Boomie- I didn't know Qualcart can do it.
That is really great. How do they look,
do you have any or picture of the Qualcart
ones. I assume those in pic are ones we did..
I used the 499 name just to distinguish it
from all other 500s. Ed
