I recomend Barnes to people but dont use them myself.I dont like the fouling. At my 9.3x62 and 404 Jeffery's velosity Woodlieghs do just fine and they are AUSTRALIAN made.

The fouling is the reason I don't like them. I thought there were more shooters that wood not like it also.

Most of the historical data I have seen always placed the old Winchester Fail safe as the deepest penetrating expanding bullet followed by a Barnes X. A Nosler partition was not far behind. If I recall the NP's would penetrate as deep as the A Frames due to a smaller frontal area. I am not so sure that the front end of a NP blowing up does not have some lethal effect in its own right spreading a little shrapnal within the body cavity. I am interested in trying some TSX's in 416 and 375. I can tell you I have shot many many feral hogs with 95 gr NP's out of a 243 @3100 FPS and they blow through both of these so called "tough" shoulders and kill quickly. But then again feral hogs are not tough to kill; just hunting lore!

The Old Winchester Fail safe I've heard alot about how good it is. I think I'll try them out. I have a lot of experence with the Noslers bullets.

The Failsafes are no longer made but you can find them from time to time.

Sorry, I ain't in that crowd, I just like the jobs that Barnes bullets do for me. There are lots of good bullets out there, in fact, I have never had any problems with Remington Core-Locts. It was a consious choice I made a few years back, after having tried a few different bullets, Hornady, Speer, Sierra, Remington and Winchester for the various rifles I load for, I tried the Barnes and decided the increase in price was worth it due to the increase in performance. Even the rocks don't last forever.

One thing I have noticed about the Barnes TSX is that there seems to be a wide variance in the degree of copper fouling from one barrel to another. I have one barrel, at least, that doesn't foul much whatever I shoot through it, and others that show a definate increase in copper wash when I shoot the Barnes through them. I clean after every range session with copper remover, so it's not a big problem. It just takes longer to clean a barrel, the more copper that's in it. Yesterday I shot two rounds of the 350gr TSX bullets through my 458, and inspected the bore this morning. The lands are completely awash with copper. That didn't happen with Hornady, Speer, or even the Swift bullets.
I had a 357Mag that fouled terrible with barnes pistol bullets until i used some KG bore polish on it. Now I can shoot a box full with minimal fouling. My No1 375 still fouls pretty bad with tsx bullets, but is much better after using polish on it. I have a 6.5x55 that was the same but fouls very little after a little polishing. Give it a try. The No 1 fouls the most at the BBL band and the front sight band, which i think is from the heating to silver solder them on. I'm sure the metal is changed a little there, but overall it is much improved Curtis

Thanks. That's useful info. I'll try it. I just bought two more boxes of the .458 350gr TSXs, so I'll use them because IMO they can be trusted, from everything I've read. If I get a chance to take a moose, or black bear, I'll know for sure. I don't have any rifles with barrel bands, or front sight bands. All the open sights I have are held on with screws, which is my preference. I'm having NECG sights put on my Ruger 458. The rear sight just attaches to the rear of the reciever like a scope ring, and the front sight is attached with one screw. I was having a problem getting decent accuracy and velocity from many other bullets (Nosler B'tip, Berger, Seirra) in my model 7 .260 remington so I tried the barnes TSX. I found I can use a lighter for caliber bullet and get great accuracy and better velocity. I have yet to lose a deer with this bullet. I want to find a used bullet, but they go through and I haven't located one in the ground yet.

Everybody has had their fun with this topic so I'll give it a shot. I like the TSX. I shoots very well for me in my 30-06, 375H&H and my 375 Weatherby. I does foul but not as much as the old X bullet. I've gone on two safaris recently of 21 and 23 days, never cleaned the bores and they shot fine. When I returned home the bores cleaned up easily withtwo applications of Wipe Out. The KG product seems to work well also. My observations on the TSX performance on game is that they penetrate well but I think they don't kill as quickly as the Nosler Partition on game of elk size and smaller nor do you get a great blood trail. On the game I've shot with the TSX I've only had one bang flop and that was on a mule deer at 365 yards. Go figure. I don't find this to be problem as I am confident when using the TSX that I can take any shot presented and the bullet will reach the vital. Particulary for Africa when you never know what might be around the bend I think the TSX is ideal. Mark MARK H.
