404 Jeffery Barrel Length?

It looks like I'll be able to convert my Win 70 Safari Classic in 375 H&H to 404 Jeffery. At this point it has a 24" barrel on it I'm now thinking about what length of barrel to put on the converted rifle. I'm considering 23", 24" or a 25" right now any thoughts from those that have been there done that?

I put a 25in with 1 in 14 on mine. Aperture sighted only. Would do the same again. Good compromise between tradition and carryability.

I went 23" with on mine, it is on a MRC action. I like the feel and balance with that length. Still get plenty of velocity for the round.

I would go 23" to 24" depending upon the balance and feel of the rifle...going to let my gunsmith decide what works best from that point. Also, went with a 1:14 twist.

I would be going with a new barrel setup like Fred's Rifle with a 1/4rib and NEF express sights. I think 23" is very practical but 25" seems like a more romantic classic look for lack of a better way to describe it.

Speaking of Mannlicher 404s, there was a Peterlongo 404J Mauser with a 26" barrel and full Mannlicher stock on Guns America for some time....$6,000. Pretty cool rifle.

Diminishing returns on length?

My question is what was the barrel length of the original rifles? If you are going nostalgia might as well go all the way and build it close to the original spec as possible.

Brad,

go 26" and play with it awhile. It will be easy to shorten it, less so to stretch it if you start short and don't like that.

Yep, I just thought it looked balanced (I did shorten the forend about 2" though). Performance doesn't seem to suffer much. Pretty easy to get 400gr @ 2250fps, about all I want to shoot from my 10 1/4# rifle.
