Well now that I've been bittem by this 458 Ruger RS I need to cook up some loads. First order of battle will focus on 300grns. I have a bunch of Sierra 300 HP's, Nosler 300gr Partitions from my 45-110, & a bunch of 300gr Barnes X's w/ cannulure. In the next few years this rifle will be for deer, boars, bears, & maybe an elk or bison.
For the deer & pigs I'm thinking of trying the Barnes X & Partition 300grns around 2500-2600 fps.
So what loads have you guys used in the round with these or similar bullets?
Next tests will be using 400gr Speer FP's & maybe X's or Swifts so anything with them is ready fodder.

Thanks,
Joe

I think that you will move up and away from the 300 grain bullets soon. Most are built for the 45/70 speeds.
The 300 Barnes may do it for you.
The 458 Win is capable of overdiving the short small weight bullets.
I have gone up to the 400 grain bullets with H-322 powder for better long range accuracy and power. The 405 Remington is very cheap and make great practice rounds. The Woodleigh and Swift 400 grain bullets are great on all game but the very largest in Africa.
Sincerely,

E Pluribus Unum - where out of many, we will become one.

450 gr premium bullets and AA 2230 make the .458 WM a very formidable DG rifle.

My favorite bullet in the 458 for deer and pig sized game, including black bear is the Hornady 350gr RN SP.
I have also used this bullet in the 45/70 and in my 450 No2.

You can load this bullet up to the level of recoil you desire.
It works great on game at velocities from 1800 to 2330fps.
It fed through the 2 bolt rifles I had perfectly.

For Bigger big game I would use a North Fork, Swift A Frame, etc in 450 to 450gr weight.

hanks for the load & input data & keep them coming. I have so many 300 & 400gr thin jacket bullets right now i'll load a bunch of them for practice and probably settle on the Hornady 350, Barnes 350 or 400 for most of my needs. I want to do a bunch of wet newspaper tests to give an idea of penetration on bigger boars, bears, & bison. If accurate, that 400gr TSX will be hard to beat i'm thinking Wink

If you keep the velocities of the 300gr and 400gr thin jacketed bullets at 1700 to 1800fps or so they will kill deer great. I have shot several deer with them at those velocities with great results.

Also in the 458 they will be fun to shoot, ie low recoil.

Agreed---I'd use the 300 & 400 Speers for deer and try to stay away from the shoulders to leave a little to eat. I've killed deer with the 400 Speer flat point at 2100 & it pretty much turns inside out so 2400 ought to be a hoot. You should see what a 900gr Woody SP .620 does to a deer at 2100 Eeker

It's a 458. That means forgetting all the rubbish and buying 1k 405 rem sp and 6 pounds of rel7 or h335 or tac or wc844.

Seriusly. Rem 405 at any speed you like

That's been my choice with the 300-350 gn. bullets in mine. The 405 gn. Remington bullet is designed for 45/70 shooting at mild velocity. At 2500-2600 your results may not be all that ideal on larger animals...big boars, bears, etc.

One of the reasons that I think a 458 Win Mag, a 458 Lott, a Double Rifle in 450 3 1/4", 500/450, or the 450 No2 is one of the best big bore rifles you can buy is because of the variety of bullets you can get for that bore size.
Bullets range from down right cheap, to some of the best Super, bullets made.

This allows a person with a 458 bore "elephant gun" to get bullets designed for deer sized game, shot at what are reduced loads, with reduced recoil, allowing one to hunt with his elephant gun with loads that will kill deer sized game and that are fun to shoot.
The more you shoot your "elephant/cape buff gun" while hunting, the better you will perform with it in Africa.

This is also true for a 450/400 shooting 300gr bullets.

405s at 2600 are much like BTs...

however, at 2200-2300, they are BIG HITTERS on big boars...

In making some loads I had some older Winchester brass, only about 20. I ordered some Hornady brass. The Hornady brass is so much higher quality I will buy their brass for anything that I don't use nickel cases for in the future. Case mouths are cut accurate in length so I don't even need to trim first and the mouths are straight. Also the flash holes are clean & don't need any de-burring or anything. High quality cases.
