is a Manchester, England marked Whitworth in 458 Magnum worth $1000? It is in very nice shape and has the express 3-leaf sights front barrel band sling swivel. Verrrrrrrrrrrrrry nice condition. I know M70 CF prices are nuts, what about these?

thanks,

Rich

no such creature... the barrel will be stamped with NEM .. not english made, if it was ever in england.

it's a markX zavasta, plain and simple, of no greater or lessor worth than any other whitworth

I paid $625 for one a few months ago but have seen them bring around $800 on the auction sites since M70s ran up. $1000 seems rich to me.

Jeff,

the left side of the receiver ring is stamped Whitworth. The left side rail is stamped with an eight-pointed star inside a circle and has Alexandria Virginia (2 lines)INTERARMS Manchester England (2 lines)followed by the CZ in a circle. Like Alexandria Manchester
Virginia England

Oval British cheekpiece with the scalloped/undercut bottom edge and a slight raised lower lip. Casehardened steel gripcap, and cherckering on forend and grip. Nice wood, and brown recoil pad is marked Whitworth in a circle.

Sounds like a basic Whitworth. For me unless the wood was worth several $100 estra I would not go $1000. I bought a 375 6 months ago for $650. I've seen the 458 lower than the 375 most of the time.

As usual just my $.02

Rich,
I don't diagree that it's stamped with Manchester England. It's not MADE or even shipped to or through England. If it did, on the barrel, it would have a circle containing the letters NEM. It's not really semantics, it's the same thing as calling a Charles Daly (exactly the same issue) an american rifle, when it's totally (sometimes wood is added) imported rifle.

Unless the barrel says "NEM" it never was on english soil, even if for re-export, due to proofing house laws. If it was touched in the UK, modified in anyway, it would have to either be english proofed or stamped otherwise.

therefore, (man I get too excied about this) it's a zavasta, made to whitworth spec, improted by Interarms to the us... and not an "english Gun" in terms of the associated high (think rigby) quality of english guns

Regardless, the Whitworth's are pretty nice guns. I just bought mine back for $800.

$800 would be about right. I paid 1100.00 for mine. It had just been pillar bedded and came with a leupold scope that had been modified by Premier to the 4A configuration. The gun was basically perfect. Not a mark on it.
