All:

I'm rather new to AR, but have been posting on NitroExpress.com for awhile. (I had started posting under another handle, but I lost the information for that screen name.)

My father and I are having Searcy build us a new .577 Nitro Express DR. In mid April my father flew to CA to visit with Butch, get measured and finalize his options/engraving. I just wanted to share what we are having done with other big bore enthusiasts.

The DR will have side plates with a Cape Buffalo on one side and a Rhino on the other; an elephant will be on the bottom of the receiver. The Bulino style game scenes will be bordered with English style Scroll & Rose engraving.

I have spoken to Ron Collings, Butch's engraver, and have worked out all the fine details about what it is we are going for on this rifle. One area of concern he has is the elephant on the bottom. Butch has two screws on the bottom of his actions and Ron is trying to figure out where to place the elepant in relationship to the two screws.

I would still like to find a better picture of a cape buffalo--would LOVE one in an action shot--perhaps charging. All of the "charging" pictures I've seen thus far are too "grainy" to be used by the engraver. If anyone has something, please send it on.

Other options that we picked are:

Upgraded wood. The two pictures below represent both sides of the wood blank that we picked out:

The other side:

We are also getting the extended trigger guard, leather recoil pad, trap grip cap and stock medallion with "PPE" engraved on it--PPE represents my father's name (Paul), my name (Paul) and my son's name (Ewan).

Butch said that he wants to get it finished by the first of the year and wants to take it to SCI in Reno with him.

Now the hard part--WAITING!

Butch is one hell of a great guy. We can't say enough good things about the man.

Nice wood!

Is this going to be a boxlock with side plates?

Make certain you get the triggers about 3.5#... PLEASE!!!

nice piece of wood... i don't know where he gets it, but he has some great wood hanging around out there...

I believe you'll be getting richard's load, which will be giving you a true 2050....

you WANT it to be at least 14#...

hacing shot the searcy 577 before, i can tell you that it is an experience... any load less than 85% should have a filler.. there's NOTHING like a delayed ignition in a 577... you are sitting there, waiting for the gun to cook... it WILL... keep it on target for at least 30 seconds.. and WAIT.... far better to get hit with a lot of recoil than the case to cook off outside the chamber.

Richard's 557 was/is exceptionally accurate.. and will shoot woodleighs, barnes, and cast pretty well... the woodleighs and barnes to the same point of aim.

500Grains:

Yep, boxlock with sideplates. The price from the boxlock to sidelock was $20G more. We'd rather have more engraving/options.

Jeffe:

Will contact you soon about my other project.

Butch said it will weigh in the 14 - 14 1/2 lb range.

Not sure what the trigger pull will be. Will have to ask.

He also said that for his bigger guns, he uses Superior Ammo to regulate. We'll get all the specs regarding reloading as a starting point.

Also forgot to mention that we're getting the oak and leather case.

All:

Just wanted to give an update on our Searcy .577.

Butch emailed this photo to me yesterday - he carved the blank and here is how the stock will look - checkering has not been done yet.

The wood is in Sturgis and Butch has the metal in Boron. When Butch gets the wood, he inletting the extended trigger guard and then it's off to Mark Swanson for engraving.

Also, Butch changed the wood on us (not the one pictured in the posts above. He wasn't happy with the flow of grain in the wrist.

Here is the blank before turning:

UPDATE:

Butch will be taking our .577 to both the SCI and DSC shows. The rifle will be in the white (without engraving), but Butch wanted to bring it to the shows to show it off.

So, if you are at SCI or DSC and stop by Butch's booth, check out our .577!!!!

Yum! The new piece of wood is wonderful, and the grain through the wrist should give you a more harmonious outcome, as they say. Color me Green!
