Question; Which is better for elephant, hippo and buff, the 570 grain at 2150fps [500 Nitro] or the 525/535 grain at 2300/2400fps of the Jeffery/Gibbs?

Thanks for the replys. I am not considering rifle types just the ballistics.
I have always wondered why a bolt rifle round was not loaded with the 570 grain bullet or the doubles loaded with the lighter faster bullets as the pressures are near the same.

I doubt there is anyone on this forum who has shot enough game with both loads to offer any useful comment. At a minimum I would say that 10 buffalo or elephant shot with the .500 NE, then 10 shot with the .505 would be needed to get any sort of semi-reliable impression about their respective effectiveness.

Because a 570 (or 600) loaded to fit in the mag of a mauser would be too long or reduce too much powder capacity, in my opinion, or it would not feed if the nose was round enough to fit?

I am simply asking if a 570gr. 500 bullet at 2150 is better for buff, elephant, etc than the 525/535 grain bullets at 2300/2400fps.

500grains, I agree a large sample of game taken would be best, however If the info is not avialable from the posters on this forum where could you find it? Confused

I figure that 20 cow elephants would cost you $50K in trophy fees (20 x $2500) plus probably 60 days in daily rates (60 x %600) for a total of $86,000. Plus $20K ($10K x 2) for rifles to conduct the experiment.

Write the check for $106K, and you shall have your answer!

On a more serious note, I have observed that both buffalo and elephant chest shot with the .585 nyati (750 grains at 2250 fps) have a lot less ambition than those shot in the chest with the .500 nitro. That does not answer your question, but it is as close as I can get.

Just for fun - Another way one might try to shed light on the question might be to compare identical .50 caliber bullets after impact on cape buffalo at known ranges and similar hits. To the left is a 570 grain X bullet recovered from a buffalo @ 50 yards .. on the right, another recovered from buffalo @ 100 yards. Muzzle velocity, from my .505, was 2,325 fps. The left bullet is clearly what you get from the Gibbs @ 50 yards and the right would look more like what you might see from a .500 N.E. at that range, although I'd expect total expansion to be somewhat less.

I have shot 6 buff with a .500NE. When you place the bullet correctly, it hammers them. When you don't place the bullet through the vitals, the muzzle blast has more effect than the bullet. I'm sure, that given good bullet placement, you would not be able to discern which of these calibers the animal had been hit with. Big heavy bullets at moderate speeds...seems I remember hearing this somewhere before. Oh yeah, Elmer somebody wasn't it?

On paper the 500 jefferys and 505 are the more powerfull and I suspect that is correct, but were in the overkill catagory of big bores so what difference it would make in the field and in the real world beyond the internet the answer as in many cases is "there ain't no difference in them" and a elephant friend of mine told me that, so don't listen to the human experts....
