Idaho SharpshooterD99,
starline brass makes properly headstamped 50-110 brass. I have a couple of them, an old raggedy-ass 71 somebody butchered that a gunsmith turned into a very nice 86 clone, and a HiWall. I got my dies from CH4D and they work perfectly. That gets my vote, especially since the 50AK is just a 50-110 necked down to 348 and then necked back up into a semi-improved 50-110.

Rich,
That's pretty much what I had though!
I am looking for a reasonablly priced Browning manufactured 1886 pistol grip or M71.
I won't own anything that has Winchester written on it. Weather it came out of the same Miroku factory or not.
An original butchered 71 would work too. I had one that someone put a tip-off scope mount on, man it was ugly. Bought it to convert, but dad thought it was a trader and it went while I was in Iraq.
Double edged sword, if I got married someone else would be there to look after my shit while I am playing Navy. But if I got married someone else would be there doing who knows' what while I am playing Navy!

SAFARIKIDHad both and both will Kill Big Bear, but I like the 50/110 Better..Lower presures if needed, lots more power if wanted! I got 2325avg with 525 cast from 21" barrel 1886 by Dave Clay..Kicked hard, but was more powerful than 458Lott in a Lever Action! One shot on a Grizz, all over!Components from Midway and even Cabelas..Got a pair of BFR Revolvers that shoot it too!

Idaho SharpshooterD99,
you might lose it if you ever saw mine, I went a bit overboard. 30" octagon barrel and full magazine. Weighs a ton...empty. Holds about a dozen rounds full up. Gorgeous pieces of walnut, and rust blued. I spend hours sitting in the shop with it in my lap...thinking about the 2100lb Bison I killed with one shot. And about a half-dozen Rockchucks and three coyotes. There is great handling joy in fine walnut and rust blueing.

It's going to be a 22 inch barrled full magazine, pistol gripped, decelerator padded, good walnut, kind of rifle, with either a titanium nitrate finish on the barrels and a color case on the rest.
Hope to keep it under $4000 when I am done with it.

Idaho Sharpshooterstart by checking in with Doug Turnbull...he does lots of them, and if you don't need engraving or killer walnut you should come in under that number.

Rich,
Yep that's the plan. Have him do the metal work and color case, I'll work a stock, and and I'll find someone to Ti-nitrate the barrels, magazine, sights, and lever. Going to put some kind of express sights on it.
Might build it two stocks one in laminate, and a dress uniform for cocktail parties.

bigdoggy700D99,
you could also go with a .510 kodiak express. It is built on a marlin m1895, and is a 50 alaskan except it is 23/100 of an inch longer. It is capable of sending 450 grn bullets up to 2375 ft/sec and 600 grn bullets up tp 2050 ft/sec. I have one being made by Mic Mcphearson and it should be done in about 2 months. It has 22 3/4" bl., holds 7 rounds and has the grey Robar np3 grey finish on all metal. Total cost is right at 4,000 dollars. Starline already makes brass for it. Just another option to mull over.

boom stickbigdoggy700...
dave clay (gunsmith) is building a 2.3" version of the 50-110 (50-110 is 1.4" for the uninformed) to work in a marlin...you might want to give him a call...he figured out the max case you can get to feed is 2.3" in a marlin...he calls it the 50 texan (a proud texan he be) i inquired about a 45-70 version which he liked too. i nicknamed it the 45-80 but you could just use the extra oal to stick the bullets out further for the same performance on the cheap 45-70 brass.
load the speer 400 gr out to the rear canalure.
there is load data to get the 400 grain bullet to 2027 fps...so with the extra .2" the goal would be to get it to the 2150 mark and 4000 ft lbs of energy all with about $800 of smithing and nothing else...

bigdoggy700The actual maximum case length that Mic can get to work reliably is 2.33" with an over all cartridge length of 2.73". It sounds like thay are very close to one another. thanks for the info on Davvid Clay's cartridge.
Boom stick,
I really don't want anything that has the word Texas on it. It would make it feel smaller and less signifigant!
Kind of like how Texas is the 2nd biggest state. What's really funny is that if Texas was twice as big it would still be the 2nd biggest.
