I'm looking at getting a 550 in 375 H&H, but the 25" barrel is longer than I'd like it to be. I'd like to have it cut back to about 23". Is the front sight welded onto the barrel so that it cannot be removed and reattached to the shorter barrel?

Go ahead and have the barrel trimmed and crowned. If you want a better sight, use the necg UNIVERSAL front sight, have it soldered (not welded) on, if you like. Don't weld!!

the universal (banded or ramp) allows for elevation adjustment

BMR,
I'm doing the same thing at this moment !!
My gunsmith will cut the 25" barrel to 22" or 23", not sure yet how long I want it... bewildered
Mine is a Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H.

I just cut a CZ .416 back to 22" and installed the NECG sight already mentioned. It provides the elevation adjustments, and the windage is via drifting a peep I made from bar stock and fits into a dovetail I cut into the rear bridge. First I had to weld up the rear of the rear bridge so the sight would be far enough back to clear Talley rings.

CZ's are good starting points for DG rifles.

BTW-the new front sight has a screw holding it to the barrel, plus I soldered it for good measure. THis is an Alaskan bear guides back up rifle, so "belt and suspenders" mentality prevailed throughout

The factory sight has a set screw under the blade, and I think it is also soldered. I know you can't drive them off, so they are either pressed on really well or soldered from the factory. But not welded

Ditto to all the above. I cut my Lott to 22" and put the NECG Univeral front sight on it.

Apparently it is now standard procedure. Smiler

I think it was the medium height, but you had better screw it on without soldering first to make sure you have the right one....so you have the right height for that big rear sight (cut into a shallow V would be my recommendation).

don't know about Midway. I just order all this stuff from Brownells.

The medium sight I have is Brownells part #:

661-000-006

You can search their site to find this and other heights.

It is a crap shoot as to what height is needed. I ocassionally have to buy more than one height. It is the way it goes. I am not as chicken poop as some and try to get the supplier to accept used returns. Roll Eyes
