I have been reading some of the old posts and may have just missed it. How did the short throat work out? I am thinking of having a Win Mod 70 push feed converted by a local gunsmith. Are the reamer and go/no go gages available to rent and from where? Dummy rounds for feed work? If and when I get to that point dies? I have 416 Rigby cases to form. Thanks

The short throat (.255"] is great and will still accommodate most any long bullet. But the bullets that I prefer are the short bullets like 360 tipped CEB Lever Raptor and the 450 gn GSC HV. Here is a picture from my third wood stock. Make sure that the stock is carefully reinforced and bedded. I hope to get it to Africa later this year. Here is a 100-yard group from the new stock, from last Fall: And just before the first stock cracked two years ago: On cases, dies and gauges, Jeffeoso may have something to add. Capoward has the reamer that I used and McGowan Barrels has the Go/NoGo gauges. Most of us have headstamped cases from Quality Cartridge that have been excellent, although they are currently awaiting more demand before the next run. I'm down for another 100 cases. The cartridge is a sweet thing to shoot, and the capacity is about perfect for an all-around buffalo stomper. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Doing it on a Win M70 offers the option of using the Sunnyhill and McMillan combo, the bottom metal and stock are a collaboration of the two companies. Here it is on a very similar cartridge, my 12.7x68mm Magnum "49-bore of 2010" (49-10), a .500/.338 Lapua Magnum Improved 2.67-inch. It has a parallel-sided free-bore length of 0.252". No doubt the 0.255" PSFB is a great way to throat such a rifle for the 500 ARN, definitely the one to use on the 500 ARN. It is more than enough throat to handle any milsurp 50 BMG bullet in the 500 ARN. You only need a longer throat if you want to seat those 50 BMG bullets out to 4.5" COL and shoot them single-shot style. Some other of my "lop-wah" cats along with the proprietary/CIP .300 Lapua and .338 Lapua: Here is the same rifle as above before the Sunnyhill-McMillan combo, using the original Tupperware stock and windowed 300 RUM box, could only get 2 rounds down in the box instead of three: You can see where the rifle balances on the horn of a "meat bull." That is with a 24" barrel, No. 6 sporter Pac-Nor, 1:12" twist, .500-caliber. McGowen does indeed make great barrels for your .510-caliber 500ARN. I have only used one Pac-Nor .510-caliber barrel because I wanted to experiment with their 1:9" twist. I have five different McGowen .510 barrels, and they have all been great, in 1:10" and 1:12" twist. McGowen knows how to make them. You just needed to use either a pocket or coffin style footplate to get that 3rd round... Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

just for the record, the ACTUAL 490 caliber (.498x.490) should be shooting next month -- the first one is going to be a 490 accrel -- the 500 necked to .49 -- the 490 accrel opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Duane Wiebe does, but perhaps only for his bottom metal. http://www.customgunandrifle.com/products/floorplates I'm thinking about getting one for my .500 just for the extra room for ease of thumb feeding the 4th round for the chamber. Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

http://www.customgunandrifle.com/products/floorplates "We offer three styles of floorplates--Standard, Pocket and Rigby. The Pocket style has a recess .155" deep and will usually allow one extra round. The Rigby style has a pocket .360" deep and is usually used on large, fat cases like the 500 Jeffery. The combinations are almost endless. The right combination can allow sleek stock lines without the extra bulk of a drop style, but still have an extra round capacity. A customer in Australia needed a six shot 98 Mauser in 375 H&H to compete in a "Big Game" shooting contest. We installed a pocket style floorplate on a drop box frame to create a five-round magazine with plenty of compression room to single-load a 6th round in the chamber. Call us for your special needs! So that is $375 add-on to the regular Wiebe bottom metal, I see. I wanted a new stock, so went with the Sunnyhill/McMillan M70 combo. But for about the same money could have had a Wiebe/B&C Medalist combo, which would indeed be sweet, instead of Wiebe/Tupperware combo.
