DRRS.... Rocky Mountains? Login/Join

I know the DRRS holds events on the east and west coasts. However for a lot of us that is too far to go for a couple of days due to work issues and travel schedules not to mention we need to drive due to all the crap we would need to lug along.

Has there ever been or will there ever be something held in the Rocky Mountain area?

Hasher,
DRSS and ARBBA are entirely informal, and you can set one up yourself .. my so called presidency of the arbba is just because i am dumb enough to do it!

here's my advice

be safe!

PICK A DATE and a place
then openly invite everyone to attend

have at least 3 people working the event

water jugs on cheap stands
paperplates with big shoot n see targets
claybirds hanging from a wire

those are 3 good events.. for time and with the targets for accuracy

have primers for prizes

have a simple bbq and provide drinks

$15 per shooter tends to cover the costs

bring lots of tables

be safe!

WelI am hoping we get some responses from some rocky mountain folks on this thread so maybe we can see who would be willing to attend if we put something together.

I'm east of Colorado Springs.
Where are you hoping to have the "event" or gathering?
I'd like to attend and may be able to help with something but would like to shoot a bit as well let me know what your thoughts are.
If my schedule allows I'll be there.
I don't have a double but have a couple big bores.

Another Coloradan willing to participate. The only thing is my only DR is one of the Remington .45/70s. On the plus end, I do have three other big bores suitable and legal for Africa!

At this point I have not gotten that far and I am honestly hoping we get someone here that has land we can hold it on.

I belong to Ben Lomong gun Club but I don't have a clue weather we can hold it there or not.

So far that makes 3 of us locally to atend. I have a 470Ne and just bought a Valmet 412S double that should be here ina week or two. With a little luck i will have a set of 9.3 barels fitted to it by then as well.

Honestly someplace up in the high country would be a much prettier place to hold it than out on the eastern plains.

Count me in and make it 4 locally who will attend. I know there is a poster who goes by ColoradoMatt, he might be interested. Also, Ellis Brown who wrote the converting double shotguns to rifles book lives near Windsor CO and he might be interested.

Ok so we are up to 5 definates and 2 probables.

Now we need a nice green cool as in not blazing hot place to hold this?

Any suggestions? I am thinking something up above 8000 feet where it is going to be pretty decent year around.

Hasher, I've been thinking the same thing.
The organized Big Game Rifle Club format sounds great, but would be quite a bit of work to pull off properly. Best to start as an informal gathering I would think.
Ellis Brown does host a big bore shoot every year at his place which is just east of Fort Collins. It is part of the Vintagers shoot schedule thus I am not sure if it is generally open to a broader attendance.
I have gone the last two years and it is quite a nice gathering of guns and folks.
I am in as far as helping to get a local (front range CO) big bore shoot off the ground. Ultimately, it would be good to form a Rocky Mtn chapter of the BGRC and play by their rules since they are widely recognized and have a really good program as far as variety of guns you are allowed to shoot in competition.

Otherwise, keep me in the loop. My guns need some exercise...

Just a thought on using the high country...

When I lived in WA, there was a lot of informal shooting done in the woods/forests,gravel pits. There were a couple of nice big clearings waaay up in the mountains that I, my friends, and others I'm sure, used.

It was just a matter of someone knowing where the primary and alternate sites were in the mountains, then everybody linking up somewhere and heading up early enough to beat the weekenders to the spot. Everybody brought range gear, targets, clays, water, trash bags, etc and EVERYBODY helped setup/tear down and police call the 'range' at closing time.

Most of us were military guys, so the few that were not were carefully screened prior to invitation, and we used various courses of fire/drills with which most of us were familiar, and if not, we learned something new!!

I'm guessing that here in CO the forests can be used for such things without too much problem as long as we pick up after ourselves?

Vetting might be an issue with such a potentially diverse group. I'm not sure how many of you fellas know each other here; I know I'm new to the community.

Perhaps if such a shoot were to take place, everybody that gets an invite gets a pass until any idiocy or safety issues come up, then 'vote' and the numbers have it.

My .02 worth.

I thought of using some National Forest land but that woudl come with several problems.

1. You can get run off by LE or the Forest Dept folks. Hey I know we are legal but it appens sometimes.

2. If we use private property we can nto get hasseled. We have a definate address to go to that we can give specific directions and GPS coordinates to.

3. With private land or a gun club there is not need for a back up location in case we get booted from the primary location. The other problem with beck up locations is that it just makes it that much harder for people to find us and participate.

4. A gun club or private land give us bathrooms, defined ranges andberms and the like.

I really want to make this happen but so far am coming up blank on locations.

I don't own a big bore yet, certainly not a DR Frowner BUT, I would be interested in attending!

On another forum we put together a shoot at a free outdoor range I want to say near Byers Canyon. I will ask my brother where its at as he knows exactly where. We had a great time, couple of picnic tables are permanently in place and there are some 100 yard stands.

Ramrod -
What happened to the hills??? I thought you guys were all stoked about the Conifer area?

The Byers Canyon Range is a nice range and worth the drive. The DOW operates this range so any arrangements would probably have to be made through Hot Sulphur Springs field office. Depending on when you can arrange this event I would be in as I am in Oklahoma City through the end of August.

The DOW also operates a similar range in Keystone that may be worth looking into.

Interesting. I like Keystone as it is a little higher up, prettier, and a little closer to teh Denver area.

Does anyone have contacts with them? I am thinking Late August might be a god time to try for a small gathering of enthusiast wheather you own a Double Rifle or not.

The Caveat with the Keystone range is it is behind a landfill, literally. The Byers Canyon Range is the better of the two and can be made in an hour and a half from Denver.

For some reason the DOW website won't open for me but I'll get you the Hot Sulphur Springs field office contact info when I can access it.

Ellis Brown's shoot is in a week - of course I am on call but will try to make it.
A shoot in Sept would be nice as far as weather goes. Got my feelers out for a place.
