Rifle is finally home. Waiting on dies but did receive some 400gr Hornady DGXs. That is a really big bullet for such a pint size case. Soon as the brown truck delivers the dies, I will start working up loads with H335. Has anyone out there used, on game, a 400gr bullet in this cartridge? Thanks, Bob

Nope - But I would be interested to hear what you can get out of that case with modern powders. In it's original spec's it was a great lion round, a fair buff cartridge and inadequate for elephant.

Most of the Mausers originally chambered for this round that I see have been reamed out to .404

Ganyana. Will send chrono/accuracy results as soon as I receive the dies. This is an open sight gun so don't expect MOA at 100m, especially with 60yo eyes Wink

What is your rifle built on? I have a pre-64 70 needing a project and was looking at the 10.75x68 over a 400 Whelen. Was there a lot of action work or was it pretty straight forward rebarreling? Any advice for someone taking on such a project? Good luck with your rifle and thanks for any information.

Ozark Hunter, My rifle is built on a 98/22 action with 1909 bottom metal. The barrel is by Danny Pedersen with intergral island, ramp and sling swivel. Stock is Bastiogne and sights are NECG. If some one can post pics I'll show her to you. Thanks, Bob

About 75 gr, case capacity.

Ought to be able to, if the brass will hold.

Getting 2080 out of my .405 and 2150 out of my .411 Hawk, with similar case volumes.

Good to see the old things kept alive, though they may not be "necessary"" they are fun.

There is one in pristine condition for $3200 in Howell's Gun Shop in Gray, ME. No idea if this is a good deal but I saw it today. It had double triggers and the bolt was quite good.

I shoot a 400 Whelen Improved.

Case capacity of the 10.75X68 is about 25% larger than that round.

You should be able to get 2200 fps with 400 grain bullets at the least.

Will start with 748 and H335. Ganyana, our H335 is very similar to your Somchem S335. Dies should be here in time for some chrono work next weekend. If I can duplicate 450/400 ballistics, I will be most pleased.
Thanks for posting the pics Rusty.

All for 400 grs Woodleigh soft’s COL3.189 (81.00mm)

I don’t think H335 is the best powder for the 10.75

Win 748 starting load 58grs work up to 60.5max if you want to stay with CIP pressure limits (3300bar) 2125fps 400 grs Woodleigh soft’s

IMR 3031 start with 56grs max 57.3grs for 2140fps

Other close to CIP max: from quick load

Norma 203B 61grs for 2100fps

IMR 4320 61grs for 2100fps

IMR4895 59.5grs for 2120fps

RL 15 61grs for 2120fps

Accurate 2520 for 2100fps

As usual start below and work up the CIP pressure is 3300 bar proof is low compared to other cartridges use on the Mauser action (9.3x62 3900bar proof) so is up to you to go hotter at your own risk.

Also depend on barrel I got 4 original 10.75 x 68 and every barrel is a little different.

Have fun

when you put it over a chronograph, your opinion will change.

lots of people THINK 748 delivers the same performance as 335 (even silly enough to claim they are the same powder), however, a chronograph will quickly dissuade those folks

here's the FACTS, from a shoot em over a chrono, weigh every charge, and compare results to quickload

335 works in nearly everything, and VERY well, with higher performance, at nearly the same pressure as 748

we'll compare results this fall, when i have mine finished.

meanwhile, seriously, get a chrono and a pound of each

3031 need not apply

Jeffeosso, My choice of 748 as a starting point was based on Quick Load data. Danny ran both 335 and 748 and the latter gave the desired velocity at lower pressure. I have a chrono and when my dies arrive, hopefully this week, I will have velocity data.

Rusty, Thanks for posting the pic. Comparason of .458WM, 10.75x68 and .416REM.

Are you an ammo guide member? I had put alot of faith in 748, and 760 .. those where my goto powders, until i started deve work on the 550 express.. and had to go faster and faster and faster powders .. and then the same results with the 500 Ar, 470 ar, 458 ar, and 416 ar ... best results, and CLOSER TO quickload projections, than 748.

So, i am just saying, to avoid some of the same troubles i found and went through, that the better results were found with 335..

However, it's your money and time, and i wish you all the best with it. I'dlove it if you could prove me wrong

Interesting--In researching starting loads for the 10.75, I came across a 401gr bullet W748 load of 74gr listed in Loaddata.Com. This load was repeated here on the forum as a load used by the contributor. Danny ran it on QuickLoad using 400gr Woodleighs. 90,000psi Eeker The cartridge was originally loaded to 3300 bar, or about 48,000psi. 60gr of W748 should put me at about 49,000psi at a bit over 2150fps. Better run posted loads before taking them as the gospel. Bob

VFR1,
When you have some time, drop me a PM with an email address that'll take a largish file. I'll send you an article I have from 20 years ago on reloading the 10.75.

For what its worth, one safari operation in Australia for buffalo (no longer operating) offered a 10.75 as their 'client rifle' with 400gr pill. I guess they considered its mild recoil and heavy pill a bit better than the 375H&H. They woudl have had to reload, so had the option of Woodleigh's 347gr or 400gr, they went with the heavier.
Cheers...

Bob,
No worries ... might be better to edit your post and PM me the email address ... dont want it harvested and then spammed to death.
For what its worth the article appeared in an Australian magazine back in 1989. They tested using ADI powders from AR2207 through to AR2208 (H4198 through to Varget), plus W748, H335 etc... Not one powder went under 2000fps with a 400gr, some where up into the 2100's with ease. I owned one many years ago (rebored M98) and it's a sweet-heart cartridge ... I should never have sold it in hind-sight.

Results from this morning's range visit:

Temp 72*F, 60% RH 24in bbl. All avg 5 rnds

1. RWS factory 347gr 2235fps

2. 400gr Hornady DGX 60gr Win748 CCI BR primer New Bertram brass 1840fps

3. Same as above with 61gr Win 758 1966fps

4. 400gr Hornady DGX 61gr H335 CCI BR primer RWS brass once fired 1992fps

5. Same as above with new Bertram brass 2070fps

I will try 62gr of H335 tomorrow. If I attain 2150fps avg, I may stop there.
But, then again, I may go to 63gr if no signs of pressure with 62gr.
2200fps with a 400gr slug would would meet
or surpass the original .404J loading.
Be back tomorrow, Bob

i am NOT saying "i told you so" .. the results stand for themselves, 104fps more, from the same charge of h335 vs 748

which is nearly exactly the same results i've been seeing for years

Mild is a relative term--compared to the artillery you shoot, I guess it is mild. The gun weighs 7.5 lbs and sports a metal butt plate. It is worse that my M70 in 9.3x64 shooting 300gr A-Frames, but the Win weighs more and has a recoil pad. Just left the reloading bench--5 with 62grs and 5 with 63grs. Bob

NICE!!

I honestly believe you can get 2200-2250, with h335 ... which is, at that point, a cannon! but 2150 with a 400 will kill anything big enough to die

Tried 63gr of H335 first. Otherwise, same as #5 above. Avg of 5 shots was 2101fps. Expected more. Did not fire 62gr. Easy extraction. Would you try a mag primer with this load or maybe continue development with 748 or 4198? I've had enough bench shooting for the week. I'm having Lee make me one of their factory crimp dies. Worked well on my 9.3. Thanks, Bob

switch to a mag primer and start at 59 grains ...

when the "boom"/muzzleblast/fireball goes DOWN (h335 is weird) you have it .. there's a little more, but not usually worth chasing

yes, i actually have more muzzle blast/fireball on lighter loads .. i hadn't noticed till another shooter pointed that out to me, on 45/70 and 45/120 loads .. h335 LIKES pressure to burn better, like h110 in pistols

Con, Have not reloaded any of the Bertram brass, as I purchased 6 bxs new. There is a difference in the weight of fired cases. Bertram weighs 198gr, the RWS 215gr. I had to clean up the flash holes on the Bertram cases. I bought them on sale for $24/bx and for that price I thought I would give them a try for working up loads. Horneber brass from Huntingdon's is over $50/bx. I use a 3 die set by CH4D. Bob

Jeffeosso, I will load some up with mag primers and launch them next weekend. Men were men back in the 20's using light guns with metal butt plates Cool This has more felt recoil than my M70 .458--also heavier with a recoil pad. Off hand it is sweet. Bob

i know it's blasphamy, but try a slip on limbsaver .. be careful, it will roll/move around and then not be in alignment.

Try the Woodleigh 347gr at the nominal 2200fps. Your heart will leap with joy at the mildness and you'll understand why the 10.75 in a 7-8lb sporter is a thing of beauty.
