Does anyone know what is going on here? Hornady called me several times to ship back some factory 400gr DGX ammo I bought when it first was available. The lady told me there "might" be a problem with this ammo so its being recalled. She would not elaborate what the problem might be. Probably excessive pressures? The DGS is not a problem apparently since I have some and she did not say anything about it. They are sending me another replacement box of ammo. Good thing I did not get to shoot it yet!

Sounds like they're just doing the right thing. Why not just send it back?

Woodrow S:

Did you buy direct from Hornady? Is that how they had your contact info?

What were the lot #s of your ammo. I have shot a box of both the DGX and DGS and have experienced no problems. Maybe I'll drop them a line.

Judging by only the primer appearance, the DGS has slightly flatter primers, but neither appears even remotely distorted.

I noticed that Midway doesn't list the DGX anymore, only the DGS, and all the other suppliers don't have it either. What gives?

send it back -- that they called for it means it should go back.. that ACTUAL issue isn't important, if they are paying shipping

I just checked Hornady's web site. No mention of a recall on there. Sounds "fishy" to me.

Just checked Hornady's website also including a search for recalls - nothing. I did however find the banner on their webpage very interesting:
**ATTENTION** Due to unprecedented sales, ammunition and bullet orders may take 4 to 6 months to ship. We recommend you use our Retail Locator to find a local or online reseller to purchase these products.

Perhaps someone else needs that box of ammo!

I did send it back. The recall was not by the lot #, it was all of the 416 Ruger 400gr DGX which is the 82665 item #. The purchase was not from Midway, but somewhere else down south...can't remember the name right now. They had the UPS guy come to my home to pick the ammo up with a pick up slip. I am now wondering how long it will be before I get my replacement ammo. It would be nice to know what it is all about though. If anyone here has this ammo and did not get contacted by Hornady, you should call and inquire. Depending on the rifle, it could be hazardous to your face.

I emailed Hornady Customer Service about this situation on March 1st, and have not heard a thing back from them. Included references to this posting specifically also.

I see that Natchez is still listing their ammo for sale, as are several other suppliers.

Shot some more the other day, and had no issues or effects whatsoever.

I got the replacement box of DGX ammo today from Hornady. The label "tab" with the ballistics is the only visual difference, with it being plastic coated. The ballistic data is the same as the original box. I will shoot and chrony the ammo this weekend.

I shot the 416 Ruger Alaskan today, with the "new" 400gr DGX ammo Hornady sent. I can say that Ruger and Hornady really got this one right. The average across the chrony was 2375fps with the low of 2371 and the high at 2380, which is a bit better than I expected with the short barrel. Recoil was stout but not excessive, but the recoil pad did "bottom out" so I would think a bit denser pad is in order here. As for the 400gr DGX bullet...I felt it held together quite well in the media I was utilizing, very similar in expansion characteristics to a Woodleigh Weldcore. An average retained weight of 330gr (82%) and a mushroom diameter of .680, with plenty of shank left. I shoot into a packed mound of dirt with plenty of smallish pebbles mixed in as one test and 3" thick seasoned oak planks lined up as another. I am impressed with the quality of the bullet Hornady is using for their DGX factory ammo. Now I need to run a test on the DGS "solid" ammo and see if it shoots to the same POA.

Woodrow:

I emailed Hornady again, and still not getting any answer about your recall. I will try to shoot mine some more in the next week. Love playing with it, and watching my Boddingtonon Elephant DVD. Really looking forward to August hunt with it.

I have a full box of the Hornady DGX in 458 Lott. I have not shot any of Hornady products in their DG line. After I read about your recall I got the box out and inspected the rounds. All of the cases are bulged to one side where the bullets were/are not seated straight.....what do you guys think? Should I contact the factory or just shoot away?

I would call Hornady and ask them to take them back. I doubt that they will be as accurate as they would be otherwise, and may in fact cause a pressure spike which could be dangerous. Not worth the risk. As I look at the Midway website, every single caliber that uses the new DGX bullet in their factory loaded cartridges is on "back order", while the DGS (solid) is not. Certainly, something is up with this new DGX ammo. As to whether its the bullet or the way in which they were loaded is not certain...but something is amiss.

I emailed Hornady again (3rd time) to find out about this. No answer yet, but we'll see.

Haven't had any problems at all with either the 400 grain DGX or DGS in my 450/400 Ruger 1-H.

Hornady replied to my emails today, and their answer is added below. None of my ammo was affected. Shot it again the other day, and I love it.

"However, there was one load that was recalled. It is item #82665 with the lot number of 3082057".

I just got some 416 caliber DGX ammo. I haven't
shot any yet. Next time I reload for my Remington 416 I'll use those 400gr DGX bullets.
