Has anyone heard of this wildcat? If a rifle were chambered for this, could one also shoot .416 (Rem or Rigby?) or is it that one can shoot .404 in it, or perhaps neither? Thanks for any input - obviously I don't understand the designation! ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

Is that not the .416 Dakota? If so, you would not be able to fire a .416 Rem. or .416 Rigby in that chamber. In the U.S., a .416-.404 would be a .404 (.423" bore diameter) necked down to .416, just as a .22-250 is a .250 Savage necked down to .224". George

I've always wanted to neck down my .423 404 Jeffery to .408 so I could use just one size bullet for both my double and the bolt rifle. The 408. Chyenne Tactical uses the 505 Gibbs as a parent case. Hang on Doesn't the rem mag and rigby require different bolt faces Theres no way you could shoot off both these cases in the one gun. I would have thought only the rem mag regards S&F

Its a 404 Jeff necked down to accept .416 bullets. The 2 number designations in wild cats just usually means the parent case (404) and the new bullet (416) The brits did it backwards, 450/400 NE would be a 450 case necked down to 400. 416/404 would be almost the same as a 404/375 RUM, or as stated above, a 416 Dakota. All 3 are based on the same case, but would have varying shoulder positions, angles, case taper... If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

There is also a .416 Tatanka, which is the 404 Jeffery necked down to .416. You can find it at: www.ammoguide.com A guy named "Bo" did it long before I thought of using "Tatanka" as a wildcat name.

Thanks to all for the information. I came across one of these and thought I could re barrel it, and wanted to figure out if it would feed the 404 or 416. The seller did not know.... Thank you. ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

Do not know if your action would hold it, but a pretty cool conversion would be to just make the 450-400 rimless in a lathe. I have done this with .470NE, and it works just fine. You would use your old die set and have correct stamped cases. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

With the help of a fine gunsmith I built a 416 on the 450-400 case in the one and only double rifle that I have ever built. It was a neat project, I sold the gun sometime later but I still have the dies. Anyone interested in a set of RCBS 450-416 dies? By way of showing there is nothing new under the sun, Gil Van Horn built his 423 & 416 Van Horns on 460G&A cases which in turn were necked up & improved 404 Jeffery cases back in the 70s or early 80s. The 423 VH would have been little more than a 404 Jeffery improved, the 416 VH pretty much like a slim hipped 416 Rigby with a similarly fairly long neck. I always fancied one of the latter on a P14 action. I'd build it with RUM brass now though. Steve
