I'm under the assumption that many of you reload for your big bores, but for those of you that don't I have a question. Where do you guys go to buy ammo that's "affordable" by big bore standards? I just bought a 375 H&H and wanted some "plinking" ammo to break in the barrel and do some occasional shooting with. Thanks for the input.

Try to find some Remington "green box" 270 grain softpoints as these are usually the least expenssive .375H&H ammo out there. Midway would be a good srart if none of the local gun shops or larger sporting goods chain stores have any. Rodney.

I agree with Jeffeosso about the cost of ammo vs handloading. I was in a Gander Mountian store yesterday and Federal .375H&H was $99.- a box, .416Rigby was $299.- which puts it out of my league and I own both rifles. Gotta reload if your gonna shoot the big ones much. Rodney.

Second the green box, and it works well for hunting deer and the like. Privi Partizan makes some that is inexpensive. I have not used it.

I saw the 299$ a box Rigby ammo as well. You HAVE to reload for something like that, i mean if you're talking about the CZ, 3 boxes of ammo and you've almost paid for another Rigby!! And 60 rounds isn't even breaking that bad boy in.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I have shot the 270gr Remington Green Box in several different 375's.

It has been very accurate in all of them.

It kills wild pigs pretty good too. Big Grin

As others said, green box Remington, or, blue box Federal. And don't forget about Hornady. They've got some fairly inexpensive loads for the H&H. I buy mostly from Midway or Midsouth, but I reload all my stuff, from 22-250 to 416 Rigby, becasue I can. For the Rigby it's a must. One box of Federals buys you the equipment you need to start. The next box gets you lots of Hornady brass and plenty of bullets, powder and primers. I can put together that $299 box in less than an hour, with a cost of less than $2 per round with premium bullets.

hey Rodney, tell them about the coronary arrest you had when you asked for a box of 505 Gibbs for that big gun of yours.

I know better than to attempt to buy certain large caliber ammo. killpc The cost is just way out of hand campared to rolling your own and besides I get alot of enjoyment out of handloading. Midway had some 5- packs of loaded .505Gibbs at $91.- and change which is pushing $400- for 20 rounds. I can buy alot of loading stuff for that. Rodney.

Cheaper than Dirt had Winchester brand 375 H&H FMC 300 gn on sale for $29.97 if you ordered online. It was $39.97 in the catalog. I got 3 boxes and two were perfect and one (different lot) was a little corroded, but not bad. I pulled them apart and cleaned that box up and they look fine now.

I do not buy ammo I reload for all my rifles & handguns. If I had to buy it that would end shooting for me.

Hell I couldn't even find 404 jeffery ammo on the net. Fortunately brass, bullets etc were no problem. Now I'd rather roll my own.

I went ahead and bought 3 boxes of that as well; just to get me by for the time being. I'm going to save the brass and look into reloading in the near future here - seems like the best approach.

Another vote for the Remington Green Box 270's. Back in '05 when ammo was still somewhat reasonably priced, I bought about eight boxes to break in my rifle. The brass lasted me for a long time when I bought the equipment. I think I still have a box left. Good whitetail medicine.

One more for green box Remmie in .375 with a 270 grainer on top. They are very accurate in my rifles.

I bought a few boxes for fun shooting not too long ago at the Bass Pro Shop store at Patriot Place next to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. They carry them (but no other big bores) in regular stock. I think they were about $44 per box.

For .404 Jeffery, look up Kynamco, they do advertise online and do have ammo
