I whipped this up today using a Mossberg MVP .223 rifle as a host. It now fires .458 SOCOM. Rifle weight unloaded is 6.0 pounds. I know......pretty whimpy for a big bore on this site. :-(

Ok, I think that's pretty darn cool. Slap a micro red dot on it and go thumping.

Tony,

What load performance do you get out of it?

I'm not sure what the thing would put out in the bolt action. We have been building AR-15's in .458 SOCOM since 2001 and the AR bolt can really only handle 35,000psi keeping with a good margin of safety. I imagine this bolt gun can handle a bit more, but I haven't tested it above 35,000.

However, it won't have any problem doing 2000fps with a 300gr bullet and can probably put a bit more steam on it. The SOCOM is a low performance big bore compared to what usually gets discussed on this site.

Tony, that is a cool tool. A little bolt gun with the performance of a .45-70!

I have one of the Mossberg MVP Patrol Rifles in .223 and it is very handy.
Do you plan to do the .458 Socom conversion for the Patrol threaded for a suppressor as mine is?

I don't think we'll be offering iron sights, but all of the barrels will be threaded.

We probably won't be able to nail down the pricing until we are closer to shipping. I don't think it's going to be too pricey since the barrel is extremely simple and the bolt head isn't that difficult to manufacture either. The most complex piece looks like the extractor. The OEM design is a bit squirrely.

We will also offer barrel wrenches and action holding fixtures at the same time.

I have a Remington 700 458 SOCOM and I think the way you did that one is the berries. Much better feeding. You can jazz up the SOCOM pretty well in bolt guns because you have more powders to work with (no gas port pressure to worry about) but the brass is the limitation. All in all, for me the fun thing about the SOCOM is how efficient and pleasant it is and still has plenty of thump in the standard loadings.

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

My buddy built one for the fish and wildlife service based on a short action ruger 77 mkII. They use it with a suppressor for in town moose control work. They also have an AR15 in same caliber throated out for 500gr hornady RN for subsonic loads.

It would be even handier in that MVP with an a r15 magazine. Combined with a suppressor and will make for a lot of fun. It would be a killer nightime hog rifle.

I think I now have to save up after all this talk about suppressors. I must own one to see just how quiet they are with subsonic ammo. My 458 SOCOM is sitting in the bunker (gun safe) all lonely as I type this note. Packrattusnongratus

Tony-
Glad to see you on the forum. I bought one of your AR rifles in 50AE from a friend a number of years back. Good fun.
