+1

The .450 NE 3,25 is simply great.

.375 Holland and Holland Belted Rimless Nitro Express

It's probably killed more elephant than all the other nitros combined. It's more accurate. It shoots flatter at longer ranges. And the rifles are easier to carry.

Need I say more?

I like the 450 as a good all around african cartridge.

I reckon the cartridge that has probably killed more elephant than all the other nitros combined would be the 404J. Especially when you take into account all the culling operations. Never as glamorous as the 375, but....

What's so great about the .450 3.25"? It fires a 480 grain bullet at around 2100 fps (slower in real barrels, as the factory published velocities with 28" proof barrels).

At least two other .450s did exactly the same thing. In fact, the 500/465, 475, .470 Nitro Express, and others have almost identical ballistics.

The way I see it, most of the double-rifle nitro expresses are essentially identical, and any differences are ones of availability and price of the ammo.

Only on the ends are there any real differences--9.3x74, 450/400, 500 N.E., and that's about it. I've never fired a .577 or carried one far but I've heard it's on the verge of being a stunt like the .600--recoils too much to allow fast second shot.

agreed
except 475 no2; about 200 fps faster than the others, ie modern DG caliber velocity

Well, that just happens to be the widely accepted ballistics for qualifying as a stopping rifle. Also, shorter barrels are fully capable of producing the standard velocity of 2100fps. It just takes a change to faster powders!

Not sure I would classify the 500NE on the end! I'd say it's in the sweet spot of Nitro Express calibers!

Call me a stunt man because I'm about a day away from purchasing my first 577! dancing

Yeah, I heard that same statement about the 500. Or actually, anything over .40. I've posted evidence to the contrary in the past on several occasions. It's all about practice. But I agree with you. YOU are probably better off with a scoped 375. Doesn't go for everyone though!

I shoot a 600 at elephant so fast it's almost like doubling it. Oh wait ... I DID double it... Then I reloaded and shot a proper 1-2 pretty darn quickly. Funny thing is , I never tired of carrying it nor did I realize I had doubled it on my first shot. Must be my massive size absorbs all that recoil more than most. Wink

Todd,
You'll love the 577NE - I do ...

Yeah Doc, If we actually get to do that Ultra Big Bore Double Hunt that Aaron was trying to put together, with everyone else using 577's and 600's, I just couldn't bear the fact that I was going to have to defend the use of my little 500NE! hilbily

Now if Michael458 showed up with one of his stumpy pea-shooters and missing a barrel at that - then we would simply shake our heads out of pity for him ...

Third vote for the 450#2. Out of curiosity anyone know who might have a reamer. Seems like a nice fit for a Ruger #1.

Favorite Nitro Express caliber:

1- From the view point of going back in time
and being a pre WW II ivory hunter, 577 NE.

2- From practical standpoint as a sport hunter
today, 450/400 3".

If I was a rich man I'd have Bailey Bradshaw
build me both for Africa's Big 6, (hippo incl).

Best regards,
D'Fan
