i would arrange a try befor you buy.......or a short periode of time where you can shoot the gun and if it dont proform you can send it back.

its a good buy at that price as long as its in good condition.

you can always have some one like searcy refurbish it for you.

this is NOT a 500 nitro, it's a 500 BPE,
i realize for us that know, it's clear, but we was all once them that didn't know.

ross seigfried said it will "the 500 bpe was the 30-06 or perhaps the 338 of it's day"

recall that the BPE is from the time that a 577 BPE was considered a MEDIUM

Fun caliber.

I know a fellow over near Baker City, OR who has one. I was with him when he plunked an Elk with it in 1994. Not super penetration, but at double rifle distance it went through the boiler room ok. It was actually a fairly light and nimble rifle. It was, and would be good for medium game in thick conditions. I think he had taken it up to Alaska on a caribou hunt of all things; how he kept it from rusting I don't know.

I shot 2 caribou with my 450/400 3 1/4" double in Alaska. I also killed a black bear in Montana on a backback spot and stalk bear hunt. It is real easy, hou just wipe down the outside of the rifle, and dry out the bbls every night.

PS. the weather was much worse in Montana. Rain or snow every day.

It is a BP rifle and from that picture the bores aren't that great!

You want a 500 NE? Go buy a new Merkel. It's all the rifle you can handle!
Just my opine.
