Just wondering how many rounds per day you guys with the really big guns shoot per day. I can fire my .416 Rem. as many as I want and even the 378 doesn't rattle my brain, started emptying the factory rounds I received with my 460 yesterday. Took less than a half a box to let me know it was time to stop. This is off hand not at the bench. How many .50s and .60s do you guys touch off before its time to quit? Just to clarify, no problem with my shoulder just brain rattleing I'm thinking about.

I don't even try to take the full recoil of bench shooting as I don't want to learn a flinch into my trigger pulling form. I always shoot with the rifle mounted in a lead sled shooting rest that absorbs most of the recoil. When I am finished shooting for the day I fully load the rifle with 4 cartridges and fire them off from the standing position just to keep my mind remembering that the rifle actually does recoil when I squeeze the trigger. Sometimes I slow fire these last 4 shots and sometimes I fire them off just as fast as I can work the bolt, acquire an on target sight picture and slap the trigger. Just as fast as I can, pushing for speed and fair accuracy. Naturally the group I get is considerably bigger than then slow fire from the lead sled. But its still fun to do.

I shoot several times a week because it is my "work". These sessions are usually sight-ins for customers rifles and testing of new bullets/loads. I use a standing rest for the .585 and up and everything else is off the bench. I may average 15 rounds per session on the big guns. At our Big Bore shoots I may shoot 30 rounds of 600 Overkill. My load as of now is running about 2,150 fps. I am going to tone that down a little for the next shoot, maybe 1,900 or so with the 900 grain. I always try to use a brake when possible for my testing. No use beating myself up too much. After one of our Big Bore shoots I place an ice pack on the shoulder for the ride home and I never get any bruising unless the butt had slid down to my bicep by accident. It seems my brain gets rattled on the first few shots, then it gets easier the more I shoot. By the end of a match I'm having fun and am ready for more.

For load development I use a shot bag filled with number 8 shot between stock and shoulder. Andy

while working up reloads for an african hunt several years ago my right eye started bothering me. had a dr. check it and he told me i was on the verge of a detached retina. i had been shooting about 50 - 70 rds. per session from the bench, of .375 &.458. just thought i would pass this on. velocity is like a new car, always losing value. BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

I'll shoot probably 20 rounds of my 458 Lott when I take it to the range.

Any issues with the lead sled cracking stocks or scope tubes? If you use a light load of lead (10 lbs) will those concerns go away? I don't need one now (my 375 H&H is a pussycat with regards to recoil), but I may want one if I barrel up to 470 Capstick. Don't have a flinch yet, don't want one ... MTM, i'm fairly mew to Big Bores but i've found that at a match were the shots are split up i can go 30 - 35 rounds easally. When i'm practicing an shooting without the breaktime i'm done at 18 - 20 rounds. It's not my shoulder that gives up it's my brain...whats left.. I do all shooting standing or on one knee. I built a set of cross sticks for testing loads. Thanks for all the input guys. I guess its self explanatory, if you can feel it in your head its time to stop. It'll get better with some slghtly reduced hand loads. Just for the record, this factory gun is much nicer to shoot than my previous one on a Ruger #1. I got lucky and hit the 200 yd. gong off hand with it on the first shot, went and put the gun in the rack and tried to keep a straight face while acting like I do it all the time and it was no big deal. You wanna a gong swing?

I never really count, just shoot until my vision starts to blur and I hear the voices again, then it is time to pack everything up. Mike

Depends.. extereme focus, bullseye off hand shooting, that is nothing but trigger and hodl work, then 10 is A BUNCH busting water jugs at a bubba shoot? 40 may not be enough if one uses a lead sled, its PURPOSE is to slow, not stop, recoil. 40# should be a MAX but only on a very heavy kicker... 1/3 of recoil should be a ceiling jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I am quite new to the wonderfull world of bigbores (I will never leave it:-)). 20-25rounds with the 458Lott is enough, I do feel it in the neck if I go on. I do my shooting sitting on a pice of timber og sitting by a rather high bench.

I've shot as many as 40rds of 404ju in a day, even off the bench it's ok. When I had a 458lott, 12rds made me light headed. Everyone is diff. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I can shoot a .416 or 404 all day long. I can even do an all day long rock chuck hunt with the .416.....I can't do this with a 458 Lott and up..thus my choice of the 40 calibers. A great blessing in life is when one can realize and admit to his recoil tolerances, if more folks would do this then less game would be wounded and more PHs would stay in a good mood IMO.... My .375 H&H, just 5 rounds every couple of weeks to re-confirm the zero. .416 Taylor - I'm having fun with so I shoot it about 20 or 25 rounds per range session. .458 Lott - about 10 or 12 rounds every shooting session until I get good enough to hit a clay pigeon at 75 yards, then 50, then 25 yards in rapid succession. Ouch! Then I go to the .300 WinMag and shoot all day. Namibiahunter .
