Anyone use hawk bullets in their bigbores? Did they perform well on game?I was wondering how something like their .458 or .475 500 round tip would work on big moose.

Good for plinking, but I wouldn't use them for anything else. I have had them fail.

They are intentionally made "Dead Soft". I think Jeffeosso discribed them best "Pig Grenades".

Against think skinned game they do what they say they will do. . .Mushroom!

Does anyone know if this “softness”; i.e., "pig grenade", applies solely to their 0.025” and 0.035” jacket thickness bullets or does it apply to their 0.050” and 0.065” jacket thickness bullets also?

.065" thick .550 bullets.. hawk grenades! .. shot into 3/4 plywood, and had the jacket on THIS side of the target...

if you have no choice, they aint bad.. if you have any choice, get hornady or woodleigh

Thanks Jeffe,
I’d heard they were both cheap and accurate therefore very good for practice. So guess it’d definitely have to stay as a practice/get used to heavy recoil bullet.

400 grains x .035 FP...........$48.50 Box of 50
400 grains x .050 RN...........$62.00 Box of 50

The above is from Hawk's website. Buy the Remington 405 or the Speers for less than half that. Hawk is crazy with the prices they are charging.

Yup, they ain't cheap no more. And when you get above 45 caliber (especially 50 and above) good hard cast bullets will give you good service for practice. They kill well, too.

I have killed a few pigs, deer and several impala with Hawk 285gr .035 jackets in a 9,3x74R double.

I have also killed deer, and several pigs with a 300gr .025jkt .408 diameter Hawk in my 450/400 3 1/4' double as well as one pig with a .035 jkt 400gr Hawk.

One pig ran about 10 or 15 feet, the rest died in their tracks. They have been the most effective bullet I have used on game of this size. I have not used them on bigger game.

They seem to be a great choice for deer and wild pigs when using a big bore rifle.

For bigger game, including cape buff, I have had excellent results with Woodleigh Softs.

I have recovered the bullet about half the time, they do make a BIG mushroom.

I've used them on moose and other thin skinned game.

I found the Hawk bullets to be very accurate in my rifles, and to perform well when I used them.

I shot a kudu at almost point blank range with my 404 Jeffery, with a 350 grain Hawk (in the chest). (We surprised each other coming around a small hill)

He dropped like it was a head shot.
At the skinning shed we found the jacket just beneath the offside skin...the core had exited.
My PH said that it was a "bullet failure".

It may have shed it's jacket, but it sure didn't look like a failure from where I was standing.

I use the 300 gr on my 404 Jeffery for smaller game like Deer and Coyote. Accurate and easy on my barrel.

Add a couple of bear to that from my 444 marlin. Very quick kills and extreme exit holes to follow up although not really necessary.
I also use the .408 in my 450/400/3.25.
