Gents, I was given some Barnes 450gr tsx and 480 Hornady dgx . I would like to know what powders to use and what loads you use ? Are any powders good for both bullets ? I will be shooting a Mark X mauser . Africa Bug " Embrace the bite , live for adventure " EJ Carter 2011

This has been discussed over and over. Please do a search. 465H&H

EJ Howdy -- these bullets take distinctly different loads, due to length of the bullet. H335 is a great 458 winmag powder, as its both fast and dense. You can get load data from www.hodgdon.com and from barnes.com or from ammoguide.com the 480 didn't do so hot in MM's bullet performance testing, but the tsx did great .. aim for 2100 the barnes will take SIGNIFIGNTLY less powder than the hornady, at the same OAL there's been plenty of discussion here, and by using the search feature, you can find previous discussions and talk right to the guys who have used them jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Try Accurate 2230 or H4895. Use a 24" drop tube. Work up slowly. You should do just fine with these and other "modern" powders". Good luck. LD

Has anyone loaded this cartridge with TAC or Varget ? I did the search and these are not mentioned on the forum. They are on the Hodgdon and Barnes load data. H335 and A2230 seem very popular and will be a starting point , but want to pick a third for experimenting sake. Africa Bug " Embrace the bite , live for adventure " EJ Carter 2011

After doing a bit of experimenting on 450 Swifts and 500 Hornadys, Id guess those two powders are the go to's. I have settled on 2230 because commensurate charge weights give better consistency in the 500 grain loading. For me, anyway.

I use IMR4320. All around 85grs. Its all acording to what kind of bullet you want to shoot.

JRO; 85 gr? Sure you are not talking about a 458 Lott? This gentleman has requested load data on a win mag. Not sure you can get 85 gr of IMR 4320 in a WM case. I believe about 73 gr of ball powder is a 100% fill rate without any compression with a 500 gr pill. 85 gr of a stick powder like 4320 would allow little room for the projectile without a lot of compression. Barnes lists RL-7 at 57 to 62 gr, and 3031 at 65 to 70 gr, for their recommended powders for their 450gr...two grains less starting for their 500 gr...plus several others. I think the 85 gr of 4320 must be a mistake as that is WAY over pressure for the 458WM for that bullet...I sure the HE** wouldn't use it. I talked to Accurate Arms about a powder for my 458 American...they said AA2460. I tried it and AA2230 in my 458 American, 458 WM and 45-90, 100. The AA2460 gave the best velocity and pressure...it's just slightly slower than AA2230, gave me higher velocities and more reloads per case. At top loads for my rifles I got 6-8 reloads per case with AA2230 and with AA2460 at 35-60fs more velocity I got 10 reloads and could have gone more but 10 is my limit for those size cases at those pressures. The loads were optimized for each rifle as far as OAL and presssures were concerned with AA2230 first then the AA2460. Luck
