Can someone tell me what to look for when buying an old mauser rifle with the intent of using the action for a 404 jeffery? What about a 416 taylor? Or how about a 423/375 ruger or something of that sort? I was just going to buy a cz 550 but the action on that thing is huge and if it doesn't have to be that big and can be done on a standard mauser (that's what I've gathered reading posts on this forum) why not go smaller?

Can you use a Mauser 98 sporter in 8x57?
What about a German 98 mauser in 8x57 CE 43?
Sweedish sporter m96 in 8x57?
Husqvarna model 146 mauser 98?
Husqvarna model 46 9.3x57?
(Forgot to add) German K98 (several on the site all in 8x57)

As is apparent I have no clue. I just went to a website that has a bunch of old used guns for sale that are available in Canada.

Any advice would be great.

unless you are willing to spend 500 for the bottom metal alone, avoid going this roundOr how about a 423/375 ruger or something of that sort?

cz 550 and big are generally always a good choice. If you go smaller, I humbley (i don't know how to SPELL that word, but I am from texas) suggest the 416, 458, or 470 Accurate Reloading, which match and beat the 416 rem, 458 lott, and 470 capstick, from a standard length action

Stick with a m1898 or k98 (sometimes a k98k or 98k) action for making anything larger than 9,3x57, on, please. There are exceptions, but those are few and far between.

a VERY easy build is a m98 and the 376 steyr.

Just buy the CZ if you want a for a 404 J, and be done with it! It will cost you far less in the long run, and you will have a better ballanced rifle for the cartridge you want. thumb

If you want, go Nickudu's Files and click on his latest entry, Original Mauser Sporters. It's a good read and will give a brief background on them.

.375, as a Canuck myself, and a confessed custom mauser addict, I can tell you that they are certainly a nice way to go. There are, simply put, a plethora (good word, eh?) of aftermarket goodies available for them. Timney or Bold triggers, stocks galore, etc. Any German, Yugo, or Brazilian-made 98 is fine. Just know that you should try and find one that is not in original military form, as these command money as collectors' items, and because of the large-dollar work that will need to be done. Try and find one that has had, at minimum, the bolt-handle done (bent) and drilled and tapped for scope, as these are the most expensive things. Having a barrel threaded and chambered shouldn't cost more than $150-200, and then you are on your way.

As a Mauser addict I've been trying to collect military contract rifles from as many countries of the world as I can! My addiction has been quite educational concerning the history of the guns and the countries they were used in. As far as quality and collector appeal I like my 1909 Peru rifle the best, but the Argentine and the 1935 Brazillian are quite nice---let me change continents and go on---I think you get the idea. I'm not an expert on the Mauser rifles but they are a favorite out of my military and commercial collection. The 376 Steyr would be a great conversion for an old military M98 or contract equivalent 98 action. After I get through the holidays I will custimize another one and the addiction goes on. R.

Sorry my I was sidetracked by my addiction and had to go back to the original posting to get straitened out. Try to get a large ring Mauser preferably one made before WW2. Just my preference. If I'm not mistaken the Huskies have small barrel rings and are less desireable for big bore custimizing over the 9.3 bore size. R.
