I've been toying with the idea of getting my m70 300 win mag turned into a switchbarrel and gettting a heavy barrel for it also. I was thinking about either a 416 taylor or the 458 winnie. I think that either would be a good caliber but I might as well go big. I already have a 375 H&H so the 416 taylor might not be that big a step larger.

My goal is to have it set so that I can carry my rifle with the 300 barrel attached and then if I see a big brownie I can screw the 458 barrel on and head up the mountain. Or maybe if I was to head out to kodiak or something I would have the 300 for deer and could put the 458 barrel on for dedicated brown bear work.

The smith that I talked to said that either will work because they are close in overall length.

You never hear anything about the plain jane 458 winnie anymore. Is it just so boring that nobody has anything to say about it???

458 Lott if you already have a 375! Although unless you stick to iron sights resetting the scope will be a nightmare that's not on Elm Street!!

Since you're set on a switchbarrel style of gun, may I suggest the wildcat-to-be the .416-375 Ruger.

Its definately worth considering. The only problem with a wildcat is that I don't have a place to reload any more. Small house, small children, zero personal space. Thats a lot of the reason I got rid of my 338 RUM. I figured the 458 winnie was pretty universal and easily come by in a pinch.

You know that old saying "what if you loose your ammo while hunting" that everyone used to say about wildcats. I never gave it much credence until two years ago with the little airboat rolled, loosing almost all the gear. THe rifles were found easily enough but most of the ammo was gone leaving only what was in the guns at the time 3 rounds a piece. My buddies 300 winnie, and his dads 340 weatherby. They were luckily able to get more ammo at a fairly nearby village, it only took one day out of thier trip to go there and back. The 300 and 340 are both fairly common up here so ammo was available, had I been using my 9.3x62 or something like that it might have turned out very different.
