CZ 550 375 H&H to 458 Lott? Any tricks? Login/Join

Hi
I have a chance to have a 375 H&H barrel rebored to 458 Lott. I LIKE this idea. I'd still have the other barrel, if need be, though I don't think I'd really go back. Plus, I'd have a light 458 Lott barrel, something the CZ could use, just a bit.

Anyway, I've had some fun lately. Had a Chance to shoot a 500 Nitro double, 450 Nitro Express 2 500s at 2150 fps, double with 570 grain softs at 2014 fps, and, some fun handguns, 500 Linebaugh Maximum, 500 JRH, 475 Linebaugh.
Recoil, with the rifles, was not a problem. Any tricks, or suggestions on converting the 375 to 458 Lott?

thanks

Gs

The CZ 550 Magnum Safari rifles in .375, .416, and .458 all use the same factory contoured barrel, and they can all be quite accurate.

These barrels are all about 0.670" at the 25" muzzle.

BTW, so is the Prechtl-actioned Magnum Mauser 98 SIGARMS 450 Dakota. Same skinny muzzle of 0.670", exclusive of the front sight band of course and same 25" barrel length.

You will save a lot of time and trouble by using a CZ takeoff barrel in .458 or buying a new barrel of your specification. Chances are either would be more accurate than a rebore, and less costly in time and money.

Funny, I heard rebores can be very accurate, since they are pretty much custom barrels, made with great care...

Hey Rip, sorry to revive an old thread but I measured my CZ 375 H&H barrel OD. It's .670 OD at the muzzle of a 25" barrel as you said and .725 OD at the 22" mark. So my barrel wall thickness at the muzzle if I rebore to .475 and have the barrel cut to 22" should be .125" the same as a stock CZ 416 Rigby with a 25" barrel... Seems like it should be less whippy than a stock CZ 458 Lott for sure ...

Chuck

Lighter is not nessacareley a good thing when going from .375H&H to Lott. My Lott weighs 9.4 lbs. And I wouldn’t want it any lighter when loading 500 gr bullets at 2250.I have one that weighs in at 8.65 with scope. I reserve it for lighter 400 gr or 350 gr loads and it is still a sharp recoil.

sell the 375
get a lott, have it bedded, bolted, shortened, and a barrel band sling put on it...

23" is about right,, should come out about 9.25 before scope
