The Alaskan in .416 that I saw at Dallas had the barrel band, if that says anything.

The reason not to buy a gun, when first introduced. I suggested a little patience around the Win M70 safari re-introduction - same reason. I think some risk on any new model. Let someone else get the bugs worked out and then you buy. A little patience goes a long way.....

The best example in my life time are the CZ550 in big bore calibers. Little by little, they added one cross bolt, then two cross bolts, then bedding, then the custom shop had to get the grain threw the wrist on premium wood. Today its like a whole new gun and I can spot the old guns a mile away.

Ruger added the stud on the barrel. So now all the used guns take a small hit in value. And the stock on the shelf, sits? I am not totally sure, I suppose some Africans and Alaskan could differ. I think the bbl stud is new.

I maybe wrong here, but if so I am sure, those in the know, will set the record straight. Smiler

It also looks like the African is now available in 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag.

Personally, I like the swivel stud in the stock.

I know the barrel band looks cooler and keeps the swivel off of your off hand under recoil, but if you were taught to and like to shoot with a sling, the swivel in the stock is actually better isn't it?

I just took delivery of mine at it DID NOT have the barrel band swivel. I had to go up the chain at Ruger as distributer basically said tough crap to my dealer.

Ruger made it right by me.

Make sure your dealer confirms with distributer which rifle before ordering.

I am not positive, but I don't think the Africans have shipped with Barrel bands yet.

If it came with a barrel band I would use it but I would never put one a rifle.

Ironic is it not? Food for though....

I have used sling that way on my 30-06, but only for careful first shot, or in reality probably just for practice. I never tried that with a big thumper. Now, I wonder,.... might the tight sling strap cause some pain? Or does it distribute the recoil? I do believe, I would be afraid to try that on my Lott or Gibbs (even if the sling was on the stock that is)?

heavy recoil and front stock stud are a bad combo.. you WILL get it in your hand, it will hurt like heck, and can induce a flinch

There's a 375 African for sale at a shop in our area that has the sling swivel stud on the forearm, not the barrel. In excellent shape (used) but the asking price is way too steep.

Then would it be logical to assume, using the strap as a shooting aid on a BIG gun, with that with stud would be really painful! sling digging into your forearm?

I have a barrel band on my Ruger .458 Lott and I've had that rifle for at least a year and a half, maybe two.
