I'm getting ready to start building a 458 Ultra Mag. rifle for one of our local Doctors/Surgeons for an African big game hunt and I need to see if anyone has done one of these before and if so, would you be willing to share your loading information. Thank you....

I guess the first thing that crosses my mind [?] is--Have the game in Africa gotten harder to kill since I was last there in 1982? Reckon my old Mod 70 458 wouldn`t make the grade today!!

Dear Assassin,
Don`t get me wrong. I, along the way, have built quite a few rifles I have wondered about the merits of. Not so much with the rifle as with the shooter. Obviously your customer is VERY familar with the country/game and is able to handle the rifle. It just seems as I kinda wander off into the ???? my demands dwindle. Getting old is not fun. I still like to look and fondle a 577 Rhoda that was my dads. As it stands now? My old 250 Ack Imp fills the freezer every year so my old bursitis shoulder lives on. Still fun to dream!!! I`ll bet your customer will sit and look at the beautiful 458 Ultra Mag and think of all the wonderful trips someday---
Aloha, Mark

Hi Mark,

Doc has been to Africa several times already and builds a new gun for every trip. Last year, I built him a 375 H&H Ackley Improved. The year before that, it was a 300 Jr. and the year before, a 9.3X74R double gun. Doc and his wife and son make this their "vacation trip" and work their fanny's off the rest of the time so they can go back the next year....

Me personally, I shoot either a 6mm-284, 300 Jr. or a 280 Ackley Improvd. I'm also big into shooting deer out to and past 1,000 yards. I've been doing this for 9-years now and really enjoy every minute of it. If I'm hunting in the woods though, it's strictly handguns....

p.s. I'll post one of my 1,000 yard rigs if your interested....

Dear D-A,
PLEASE do!I would love to see it. As it stands now about the only magnum I shoot anymore is my old 264 Win on a Rem 700 action with a kevlar stock. Been shooting it since the early 70s and it has done me well. I wore out the McGowan barrel a few years back and rebarreled it with [guess what?] LOL. It still shoots as well as ever and is my backup in the elk arena. So far never needed it but it was there if I did. It`s funny but I have so much faith in my 260 AAR or 25 Souper I really wonder if hauling the old Rem out there is really necessary but it`ll go anyway. I think if I showed up in LaGrande without it my BRO would send me home to get it. Please post the picrures. i would love to post some of my own but can`t figure the way to do it.
Aloha, Mark

The Ultra-cat is a .460 G&A with rebated rim, no matter how you slice it. Not much of a rebate, but it is there. I always end up giggeling when people talks about how this case is to big, while the Acley/Lott are sooooo fantastic.

The 460 G&A is an very find round, why it hasn`t been picked up by an factory , i can`t understand, if i had my way with it would make an factory round of it instant. It`s a fine round with good performance without the belt .
