Is this a good rifle? Is $1500 a good price?

I bought my Safari Classic 416 Rem brand new from Bud's Gun Supply for $1141. It's a Columbia,SC gun and so far I have really enjoyed it. If you are going to use the factory stock on these guns plan on doing a good bed job because the factory bedding is sparse. Personally I wouldn't get a used model over a new one unless it was at a reduced cost or had extras on it. Strangely mine came with 6/32 threads for the bases instead of 8/40. That may be something different from older models but not sure...just different from what a magazine article stated.

If you have any questions about the Safari Express I will be glad to tell you about mine.

Hmm... This said "Custom Express" on the bottom, not "Safari Express"... I'll go check, and make sure its an SC gun...

Had a nifty piece of wood too, and a turned bolt and follower...

Is a RSM a better rifle?

Cabelas here in Wa has an RSM that has been rechambered to 375 weatherby. Factory barrel just rechambered, if you were flexible on caliber but wanted a tad more than the H&H.

Aglifter:

That Winchester is a good rifle. I don't know how much you can afford to spend but IMHO, the best rifle deal on the market now is from American Hunting Rifles. You buy the CZ of your choice and send it off to AHR and they will build you the rifle of your dreams to your exact specifications for $3,000. I had them do a #3 upgrade on my CZ .416 Rigby and it is a work of art. They also built me a full custom .450 Dakota. The #3 upgrade is just to good a deal to pass up. My son is a really big guy, six foot nine. I have a plain old CZ 9.3X62 downstairs and I am going to send it off to AHR and have them work their magic on it so it fits him perfectly. Go the the American Hunting Rifles web site and click on the CZ owners section and look at their #3 upgrade.

Nah, stick with the .416. Velocity is no substitute for frontal area when things go south. A .450 Lott would be even better but I don't think they chamber that.

I forgot how nice the AHRs are - I handled one of their tuned actions at a Big Bore shoot a few years ago...

I could probably swing one of them - I've just about finished buying pistols (bought entirely too many competition pistols, and am now back to shooting tupperware...)

I believe the custom express is an older model but I am not sure on the dates of manufacture. If it is a CRF gun it might be a pre-64. There is a cult following for pre-64 model 70's but I do not see the benefits over the new version. Did it have an anchor bolt in the forearm that screwed into the barrel? I know this was common for a long time with Winchester back in the day.

I have nothing against the CZ but I chose a M70 because they need less work to be ready for hunting. The good thing about CZ is they are chambered in the Lott and Rigby. With a Rigby size action it's not hard to make a really big bore gun. The CZ will also hold 5 belted magnums while the M70 3. You could go with a McMillan safari stock and Sunny Hill bottom metal to up capacity but that combo will be another grand. The CZ also lacks the Winchester safety so there's more money if you want it.

This is the great thing about being a gun owner today. We have a plethora of options in many different flavors. Remember you can have anything you want as long as you can afford it. I would just decide what I really wanted first before I went shopping because there are so many temptations. There has been many a time I walked into a shop just to look around and a new gun followed me home.

If Carter's Country has it cheaper then you know the price is way high.

Somebody here on AR has one in the classifides for $1025.
