I just bought a new (to me) M77 Ruger left handed in .458 Lott. So far, I know I shouldn't shoot it from the bench, but other than that what are the rules of thumb so I don't suffer too badly when I squeeze the trigger. It has a scout scope. Many thanks in advance.

Mine taught me to ride with the recoil and not to attempt to overcome it. I don't use one, but those PAST recoil pads are a good idea to spread out the force too/ And I read where someone recommended taking tylenol, asprin or ibuprophen BEFORE shooting but haven't gone there yet. You'll learn to enjoy it after you achieve some degree of drain bamage...

Stand up ... it's not going to "hurt" you. NO SCOPE In your case (lefty) ... turn your right shoulder VERY much towards the target. this is going to uncoil when you shoot pull BACK with your RIGHT hand Bunch your left pec/shoulder push DOWN with the left hand head WELDED to the stock stand with your knees loose squeeze the trigger Let your body row back and right grin and do it again opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The first rule of thumb is watch your thumb! If you are a stock-crawler, you may get a thumb knuckle up the nose! Seriously, that happens more often than scope dings on big bores. Just try not to lean your head into the comb. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I shoot a 460 weatherby off the bench..about 2500 rounds so far..I keep the rifle level with my shoulder so the recoil sends the rifle straight back..bending down and over over like using a varmint rifle is a recipe to get the scope to bang into your forehead and/or scraping your knucles against the blot handle or slicing your finger on the trigger..I have 1.75x6 leopold..The max power I use is 4x to insure that I do not creep up on the scope and get popped..good luck..steve

which shoulder is hold the forearm. and Harry is right... if your thumb gets close to your nose you ARE going to "wipe" it, and you'll see stars BTW, ruger didn't make a lefty Lott (afaik), so it's probably a reworked 458, which aint bad opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The deed is done! I am not the worse for wear. Not as bad as I expected. by the "numbers" it should have been 3 times worse than my 45-70, but it didn't feel that bad. We'll see what it looks like in the AM. Thanks to all. I'm sure it made a difference.
